Replace thermal paste with aluminium foil?

Has anyone try this? I mean, just purely sandwich aluminium foil between CPU/GPU and heat sink?

 

Yeah, if anyone ask, yes, my mind seems to have short circuit for the moment, but don't worry, I won't try this crazy stunt when I'm insane. Still, is it possible for this to work?

 

I don't know. May be a good night rest will restore my sanity.

The reason why a paste is ideal--is because it can adapt to fit the area where contact is made.  Uniformly.  Even if there are micro imperfections causing a slightly uneven mating surface.

 

Foil cannot.  It's a uniform thickness.  And any folding or layering will create hot-spots and pressure points.

Well aluminum foil is a solid, so it can't really fill in all the microscopic spots in between the IHS and cold plate that TIM can accomplish, hence why it's liquid.

Maybe if you melted the aluminum and fused the IHS to the cooler otherwise like others have said it's not going to work well

Paste is used because it can go inside scratches or various imperfections in the material of the cpu and the cooler on top, when the cooler is applied, the paste is squished between and fills the gaps and helps transfer heat between materials. 

 

Aluminum foil will be worse because it can be worse than paste at transferring heat (the surfaces of the foil are oxidized, bad at transferring heat) and also because there's a chance you'll now trap particles of air or have gaps between both cpu surface and aluminum foil , and aluminum foil and cpu cooler.
