Show off Your Setup! (Rev.2)

LogicalDrm

I wasn't entirely sure where this should go. It is sort of a project but not a rig project and I do not need input. In the end I've decided to put it here.

I've been downgrading from my 14U rack which I purchased about 20 years ago. It was too deep (26inch) and I no longer needed 14U space. The only good thing about it is that its material thickness is 3mm. Nowadays, racks are made from either 1.5mm or 2mm steel.

Dean_12U_rack_5.thumb.jpg.4ece018961fcca96b51636990652bb21.jpg

Dean_12U_rack_6.thumb.jpg.84dfb605bb46224eab89d70198e9c956.jpg

It's a Middle atlantic 14U rack, industrial grade (3mm material thickness).

My new rack is 12U from Penn Elcom, a UK/Canada company.

Dean_12U_rack_1.thumb.jpg.0fc3c4f28c397b80649bf049893c5158.jpg

Dean_12U_rack_7.thumb.jpg.da068c5b4bd9169177aafd6897fd8f65.jpg

Not pleased that it's only 1.5mm thickness. This means I can't bolt heavy things directly onto the rack and must use supports. But I've searched a lot of racks and the best I could find was iStarUSA WD-1245 with 2mm thickness but I could not source it within Canada.

I've decided to go with Penn Elcom because they have an actual presence in Canada.

Dean_12U_rack_2.thumb.jpg.ac627a747bb032582044c70a15b033c2.jpg

The 1U UPS is connected to my two computers (2U and 1U) as well as two monitors. The UPS itself is connected to a PDU unit seen above in the back so that I can plug things from there instead of trying to reach all the way inside. At least, that is what is supposed to happen. It's not fully done yet.

The UPS can provide power for about 3 minutes in case of a blackout which is enough for me to shut things down gracefully.

Keen eyes may also notice a blower fan at the back of the 1U. More on that right below.

Dean_12U_rack_4.thumb.jpg.074e7e834e02a3510760f139441ce298.jpg

The 1U rig is i5-12400 that has only two cores active (2c/4t) due to thermal constraints. Otherwise, the whole thing overheats. With the single 40mm fan on front, it was stable at 60c. With the blower fan at the back, it is stable at 53c. I am still trying to work things out with this thing. Hence the ghetto solution at the back with the blower fan.

Now, onto the 2U rig which is my main rig.

Dean_12U_rack_3.thumb.jpg.1603dd4bb7ea5ca4046712529f4a60e3.jpg

Well, ignore the Intel core sticker because it is actually Ryzen 7600 + Nvidia A2000. This chassis is really short (only 30cm). It has thermal issues also but not very serious. GPU is fine. The CPU however does not clock above 4.8ghz. But that's close enough for me.

Dean_12U_rack_1.thumb.jpg.0fc3c4f28c397b80649bf049893c5158.jpg

I am waiting for a blank 2U panel to patch up the front and a blank 3U panel to patch up in the back. It has two 2U drawers for some stuff and it slides nicely under my desk which saves a lot of space. My previous rack was an eye score and took too much space.

Well, that's it, I guess. I hope you enjoyed this unusual setup. You probably don't see this kind of setup for home users but I've been using rackmounts for decades.

Cya.

I personally felt it deserved its own thread. I mean, how often do you see a rackmount setup?

A lot more common than you think, especially in these parts.

A nice little sleeper here that I built after upgrading the 2070 Super in my main rig to a 4070 TI. The badge claims she has a Atholon X2. It is an AMD CPU to be sure with a bit more performance with a Ryzen 5 4500, 16GB of Corsair vengeance ram and a DVD optical drive, All powered by a white Corsair 750W power supply, all in a case that screams potato. Great for 4K video and 1440p gaming.  IMG_20230429_023719644.thumb.jpg.3c5dc04bc04ec94122bd1f5074f65bbd.jpg

Yeah but it's fine. I clean the intake every week and also under the PC. I just don't clean inside the PC.

I've done that too cleaning underneath and intakes and still did not see an improvement besides replacing the case and avoiding bottom intakes at all cost.

I wasn't sure if it would work too well, but its awesome, and quiet 🙂

Just gotta pull the tape off the bottom plate. I had it all sealed up, with just the fans drawing in. I do have the front of the case sealed, as well as the main chamber to PSU chamber is sealed, the PSU is still getting plenty of fresh air 🙂

My benchmarking rig.  Two world records this past weekend in PCMark10.

I took an old beat up full tower Thermaltake, gave it some brick red paint (needs a new window as its pretty scratched up) and my university's die cut decals on it.

You make do with what you have!
I want to do PC things but my m1 Mac Mini just doesn’t seem to have any resale value what so ever.

with a capture card, a usb-c hub, and OBS windowed display I can now play triple-A titles on my Mac!

p.s this desk was made back when furniture was made well, the drawers support 3 2x4s wrapped in a pillow case with a mouse pad nailed down to keep it all nice and tighty😂

it’s a quite nice 6 inch extension to my desk!

Hi all!  Built this in February as an upgrade from the first gaming PC I ever built (originally was an i5 6500 + GTX 1060 6GB; before that I was just gaming on whatever old laptops my family had lying about).  Also took the opportunity to transition to wireless equipment and install a set of  monitor arms, which opened up a lot of space on my desk than was there previously.

Specs:

- CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5900X
- MB: MSI B550 Tomahawk
- Cooler: Noctua NH-D15
- GPU: MSI RTX 3070 Ti
- PSU: EVGA 850GQ
- Drives: OS and games on a SATA and M.2 SSD respectively, plus I threw in a 1TB storage HDD from my old machine.

Other:
Keyboard: Keychron K2 Pro (Aluminum RGB with Gateron Reds).  This is a big step up from my previous board (a Corsair K70 with Cherry MX Blues).

Mouse: Logitech MX Master
Speakers: Edifier R1280DB Bluetooth bookshelf speakers
Monitors: 1x BenQ GL2460 (vertical) and 1x DELL S2522HG.
Desk/bookshelf/chair: No idea; I got the chair as a gift, and the bookshelf/desk were practically free from an estate sale.  The desk is probably the thing I'll look to upgrade next, just to give myself more legroom; I like the idea of an L-shaped workspace.

Tip: putting your desk over a climate control register makes a *world* of difference in the summer!

Summary:

Overall, this build went a lot more smoothly than my first!  My first was in a Corsair Spec-Alpha, and I spent a lot of time hunting for screws and the cable management options were serviceable, but not great.  Moving to the Airflow was a super-pleasant experience, and all of the mounting options seemed well thought-out.  I also love the improvement of the tempered glass side panel.  I like how it looks kind of subdued.

The upgrade to my keyboard and speakers did a lot more than I initially expected, as did the switching to a vertical monitor setup.  Both changes made my desk much better for both leisure and work (Other than gaming, I tend to consume a lot of movies and music).

Did this a few years ago....back then had a 2070 Super with a 3800X, this year did an almost complete re-do but kept the same motherboard still, good longevity! I actually had the regular 5800X since last Summer but switched to the 3D a week ago because as a gamer that version just wasn't right for my uses and bottlenecked my 4070 Ti sometimes, been really impressed with this CPU so far!

SPECS:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D

CPU Cooler: Corsair H150i Elite Capellix AIO

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Ti MSI Gaming X Trio

Motherboard: MSI B450 Gaming Pro Carbon AC

RAM: 32GB Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 3600CL18 (OC to 3800CL18)

Storage: 500GB Samsung 970 Evo Plus, 1TB Samsung 860 Evo, 1TB Intel 670p, 2TB Seagate Barracuda HDD

PSU: Corsair RM850x

Case: Corsair iCUE 5000X

Monitor: GIGABYTE G32QC 2560x1440 165Hz

Keyboard: Corsair K95 RGB Platinum XT

Mouse: Logitech G502 Hero
