Samsung Unpacked 2022 (Galaxy S22 Launch Event)

LAwLz

It's that time of the year. Today, at 10 AM eastern time, Samsung will announce their next generation of Galaxy devices.

Untitled.png.cf257901cae6b0bbef11c29e39ec94ea.png

Where to watch:

Samsung's Youtube channel

or

Samsung's Website

What to expect:

  • Galaxy S22 Series of phones
    • Galaxy S22 (6.1" phone)
    • Galaxy S22+ (6.6" phone)
    • Galaxy S22 Ultra (6.8" phone)

  • Galaxy Tab S8 Series of tablets
    • Galaxy Tab S8 (11" tablet)
    • Galaxy Tab S8+ (12.4" tablet)
    • Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra (14.6" tablet)

Rumors so far:

All of the devices mentioned above have been extensively leaked over the last couple of weeks. If the leaks are correct, we know basically everything about these devices already.

The big things leaked so far are:

  • The Galaxy S22 Ultra will be the new "Note" device. It will now have a built in and improved S pen.
  • These new devices will launch with Android 12 and receive 4 generations of upgrades, meaning that they should get at least Android 16 before not getting any more upgrades. On top of that, they will get 5 years of security updates.
  • The phones will either have the Snapdragon 8 gen 1 SoC or the new Exynos 2200 with RDNA2 based graphics.

So weird that tablet will have a notch rather lame.

As for Ultra being Note as well. No surprise, they've fragmented their S line a lot anyway. I like the more square design. The pen can be neat. Though it may be odd buy for those that want Ultra in general with top specs but not the pen. Oh well.

If leaks are true good they managed to have a flush back design. It will be fairly large phone and thick. Personally I'd rather see more battery over so many camera modules and pen. Sucks punch hole will still be there. Under display cams can't come soon enough.

The extra thing for more Android version upgrades is a big thing.

Everything is already known about these devices (at least tech-spec-wise). I don't expect any surprises for the phone line-up. There will still be a punch-hole front camera, the storage is still no longer expandable even though there are two places for SIM cards on the tray and you will still not be able to change the app drawer from annoying pages to a simple alphabetical down-scrolling list. And Bixby will still make your life just a little bit more miserable than it already is.

So I guess this is just another minor iteration from previous generations - again. A new generation of smartphones used to be exciting 5 years ago.

Edit 1: The live stream quality on YT s**ks. This is Samsung's official feed from their homepage and every example they show looks just like a really badly compressed steaming pile of trash. Good job!
Edit 2: And the audio is out of sync as well...

The topic about 'recycled fishing nets' might be off target, they seem to say 'ocean bound plastics' which is much better

I like that they start 12 GB RAM with the 256 GB model.

1 camera bump? naah fam, 5 small bumps is better!
At least would be fun for thermal testing and new heat spreader. if that is an improvement and can keep the phone + battery cooler and longer lasting.

ah so they mention "zero waste" and "for a better future"? ugh.

At least they mentioned reduced plastic packing, which is overall good to see. as for chargers, whatever that was about?
like to not include with phones, is that it or was there something else they wanted to say?

An 8k video capable/4k 120hz camera, and only 256gb of total storage......

Why does my S10+ have as good/better specs than the S22+? (1440p screen, headphone jack) Only major upgrade I see/kinda care about are refresh rate, better rear camera and faster wireless charging.

don't question the pricing and products, like GPU's buy something 2-5x the previous cost for worse spec, but is newer 🙂

I think it's a massive upgrade. Sure you get a lower resolution screen, lose the headphone jack and expandable storage but that's about it.

  • The screen may be lower resolution but it is way better on the S22 in every other aspect (brightness, color and refresh rate).
  • The SoC is way better.
  • The cameras are way better.
  • The storage is the same size, but a lot faster.
  • Wi-Fi 6E support (not important today but will be in like a year or two)
  • Bluetooth 5.2 (which is a big upgrade over Bluetooth 5.0 if your headphones support Bluetooth LE Audio)
  • Ultra-wideband support (might be important in the future)
  • Bigger battery and faster charging support
  • 5G Support
  • 4 Android upgrades to look forward to. Your S10 will only get security updates from now on.

I am going to upgrade from an S10 to an S22, and it will hurt losing the headphone jack, but I'll have to learn to live with Bluetooth earphones. Maybe I'll be able to get some free ones if I preorder.

I'll keep an eye on your feedback when you do; my current alt solution is the Sony Xperia 1 III based off specs alone (need to look at actual reviews when I'm closer to being ready to make the switch, which so far I'm not.
