Can you help me buy a new PC for under £300?

Hello! My old PC broke down after a few days and I have a tight budget on a new one, ( UK ). I do not need a CPU as I already have a decent intel 7th gen and I do not need a case.

My current basket on amazon.co.uk/PCPartpicker:

Case Fans: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B08FM933ZJ/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A3STHAF5JJFW9X&psc=1

CPU Cooler: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01MSD39CN/ref=ox_sc_act_image_3?smid=A2AQP0ZOWQKJQ2&psc=1

RAM: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07B2Y1N8B/ref=ox_sc_act_image_2?smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&psc=1

MOBO: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B08B1TDFVT/ref=ox_sc_act_title_4?smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&th=1

PSU: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01127D0MY/ref=ox_sc_act_title_6?smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&psc=1

SSD: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B086BGWNY8/ref=ox_sc_act_image_5?smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&psc=1

And the GPU Must be comparible in performance to a 960/970.

Would be appreciated if could find better parts for the price, only things I would keep are the fact that the motherboard has wifi, and it has HDMI from the cpu and it has an M.2 drive slot. Many thanks - DCR! 😄

You’ll need a motherboard for a 7th gen processor, you can’t put a 7th gen processor in a current Intel board.

You need H110, H170, H270, B150, B250, Z170 or Z270.

1xx chipsets may require a bios update first so I’d just go with something 2xx

The above is 260£ before tax and shipping, estimating 100£ for a decent 7th gen mobo. Leaving you with 40 for a gpu which isn’t happening anywhere close to a 960/970 performance wise.

When you say your old PC broke down can you be more specific?  What parts does it have and any clue which part broke?

If we can rescue the GPU then this is potentially doable, if you can't then its not as a GPU alone comparable to a 970 is more than your entire budget right now.

Router:  Intel N100 (pfSense) WiFi6: Zyxel NWA210AX (1.7Gbit peak at 160Mhz)
WiFi5: Ubiquiti NanoHD OpenWRT (~500Mbit at 80Mhz) Switches: Netgear MS510TXUP, MS510TXPP, GS110EMX
ISPs: Zen Full Fibre 900 (~930Mbit down, 115Mbit up) + Three 5G (~800Mbit down, 115Mbit up)
Upgrading Laptop/Desktop CNVIo WiFi 5 cards to PCIe WiFi6e/7

GPU actually broke, so we sent it back as for a refund we needed to.

A friend of mine has the CPU, he just said it is 5,6,7th gen, he needs to check as he works as a computer engineer but barely has any time.

Any motherboard suggestions? Can change ram aswell. I only need a motherboard that supports my CPU, which is 5,6,7th gen, a friend of mine has it and it willing to hand it over for free, so any motherboard/s that have HDMI, WIFI and M.2 slot? i have an ATX case so it can fit all motherboards.

Deppends on what cpu you get i think 5th gen intel cpu's for the most part support only ddr3, but 6, 7 gen only use ddr4. Then i think the chipset also differs between 2 new cpu generations so see what cpu you get and after that pick a mobo.

5th gen needs a different mobo and RAM than 6 and 7 so you need to find out exactly what that CPU is first.

Ah... the joy of Intel motherboards and 2gens max.... I'd look for a current AM4 motherboard paired with an older Ryzen 5 CPU... so you have a nice upgrade path for several generations.

B550 motherboard (the MSI Mortar ATX is ~£100, £120 for the WiFi, but there is a mATX version of the same that is  ~£60 at eBuyer!)

16Gb new DDR4 RAM (2x8Gb, 3200Mhz CAS16 is ~£40-£45, but try get 3600Mhz CAS16 - you'll only be able to run it at ~3200Mhz, CAS 14 on an older CPU, but the extra speed will REALLY help for future upgrades)

A 2nd hand CPU (Ryzen 5 1600X, 6core, 12thread for ~£100, maybe a Ryzen 5 2600 or possibly Ryzen 7 2700X for ~£150)

£250-£300 for the build... it'll be fine on your current PSU, case, etc.... and that way your next upgrade path is all the way up to a Ryzen 7 5800X3D or Ryzen 9 5900X on the same RAM+motherboard 😄

My workstation/gamer: Ryzen9 5900X@5Ghz, AC Freezer2 280mm AIO, ASUS TUF X570PRO, RTX3080Ti FE, 32Gb TridentZ DDR4-3600C14, M.2 1Tb WDSN850, M.2 1Tb WDSN550, 2x 8Tb WD80EFAX, Corsair HX850, LianLi O11 Air Mini + 3x NF-A14's, Gigabyte M27Q (27"/1440P/170Hz), Asus PA248 (24"/1200P/60Hz), Dell WFP2408 (24"/1200P/60Hz), G815 kbd, G502 mouse, Sony WH-H910N, ModMic Wireless.
