That tool isn't a bot, it flags comments that are "suspicious', you still need to manually confirm if it's spam and if you want to delete the comments, send them to the mod queue, or simply report them.

 

You can also use the tool to scan ANY channel or video and report comments that you think need reporting. I'm failing to see what's the issue here?

So you are implying the original bottleneck is not enough reports being made? As this didnt do anything to speed up the the turn around time for Youtube all it did was automate identifying a bot which a human can do anyways and have better accuracies. It might save time if a moderator was to have to scroll and look through comments manually but I highly doubt Youtube has the resources for this and instead relies on machine learning and humans for manual reports

Just keeping this here as a Yeah nah, I'm gonna call BS on near 100% accuracy claim without watching the video. Blacklists with some regex tumbling around... they are fine, for a while but you gotta update them.

There's no doubt that's the ugliest function in the whole program and needs to be reworked, but in my defense it's also one of the first ones I wrote in the script, before I had even an inkling of an idea what I was doing (even though I still barely do). Until this program/script, the most 'advanced' thing I had ever written was this super basic script of ~100 lines (basically half of which are print statements) for replacing philips hue bulbs in that product's app. I've never said I was good at programming, and I am the first one to admit I'm crap, and I most definitely have never ever stated that the code would be elegant (just the opposite). But the first point I want to make here is that in the months since I wrote that function and others (which yes, is just one example of many hilariously ham-fisted coding 'strategies' in there) I've definitely picked up more knowledge and still continue to try to as much as I can, because I know my working knowledge is incredibly limited.

 

I am seriously just learning as I go, and the only reason I wrote this in the first place is because there were ZERO other options out there, and I wanted a tool for myself to use, and decided may as well put it out there for others. Believe me, I looked for any options. In fact at the beginning, it literally served one purpose, which was to just delete all comments by a single user on a video, because that's all I needed. For anything more complex, I wasn't getting nearly enough spam, for me it was always one or two bots who would come in and drop 50-80 comments that would take ages to delete, so I wrote the script just to delete them all at once. Then I realized that other channels were dealing with dozens of bots, where even that script was not very helpful, so I decided adding some ways to find certain spammers. Then I added a few more ways, and a few more still because I frankly found it fun to see it improve. What you see is not some grand-designed app intended to be a be-all-end-all spam killer. It's me repeatedly thinking, "oh but what if it also did this", googling only what's necessary to accomplish that, and me shoving that feature on top.

 

As for the "near 100%" accuracy claim, I should clarify. From my understanding, when testing for something there are two useful terms, "Sensitivity" and "Specificity". Which in this case basically distinguish between what percentage out of all the spammers it can detect (sensitivity), versus of those detected as positive, which ones are actually truly spammers and not false positives (specificity). I definitely jumped the gun in my video where I stated that it can detect nearly 100% of spammers, because I was only looking at whatsapp spammers (because that's all I ever saw on my channel). But have since learned about many more types which are harder to detect, and that I am indeed continuously working on. On the other hand, I am very confident in the program's "specificity" in the main 'auto smart' mode, which is basically the flagship filtering mode, and the only one I personally 'recommend' for general turn-key usage, because I have made the top priority for that mode to be effectively zero false positives (specificity), and sensitivity a close second. This is because if this thing is going to be used by potentially thousands of channels, the last thing I want is for it to be the cause of innocent commenters being caught on a large scale. The main mode is purely designed to be as general-purpose as possible with the understanding that screw-ups with it could cause major collateral damage, which  is why I still tell people to always confirm the comments before deleting. In fact, if I see even a single false positive I investigate and see how it can be eliminated. If the flagship mode does detect 100% of all scammers that's great, but at this point I obviously don't guarantee it, because that's not even necessarily it's purpose (which like I said is actually catching as many spammers with no false positives). I'd say it's more of a tool, not a solution.

 

And that being said, if a particular creator has a problem with other types of bots, there are four 'scanning modes' (what to scan) and with each you can use over a dozen 'filtering modes' (what to scan for) so that you can customize it completely to your needs. For example, there's filtering for individual characters / strings / regex, each within usernames / comment text / both, which totals 9. There's a more sensitive version of the auto smart mode which clearly states a much higher false positive rate. There's filtering for individual channel IDs (basically what the first version of the script did), and filtering usernames for a choice from 3 different non-ascii character sets.  The script can even scan and filter comments on community posts, which is not even supported by the API (making it ripe scamming grounds and spammers know it), so it has to resort to more 'brute force' methods I found. It's slower and clunky, but it works.

 

The whole app is not a perfect solution at all and I don't claim it to be, but I figure at least it's something, and as far as I can see it's all there is. I tried to add as many possible searching modes to cover every possible scenario, knowing that what I alone come up with isn't perfect. And yes, I know the program will certainly need to be continuously updated, and that dealing with scammers is a never ending cat & mouse game. 

 

Also, I'll point out that the spam list text files you see are actually only a recent and minor extra feature which just deals with the remaining edge cases of elusive spam comments that have few or zero notable signatures, besides the fact that they are commenting spam domains and such. It is not even close to being the main way it detects spam, it's just a brute force last-line of defense you might say. As for the blacklist type variables in the script itself, yes, those are the main bulk of the detection, but there is additional logic going, including the ability to convert unicode "confusable characters", therefore being able to see through any look-alike characters, of which spammers use all the time. 

 

To finish off this rambling I'll just say that really my main goal is not to eliminate scam comments completely. It's to at least make spammers have to rely on such convoluted and bizarre methods for getting around the filters, that they will become more and more obvious as spam comments, therefore hopefully clueing in most would-be victims.  The less it becomes worth their time, the less they'll do it, and that's literally the only way to stop them (in my opinion). At least on the channels that do use it, I think it would have a notable impact on whether spammers decide to hit that particular channel, and I have certainly seen a near complete disappearance of spam on my own channel.

 

All that being said, I'll reiterate that I don't pretend to be good at programming. I acknowledge the whole program is spaghetti to a hilarious degree. But I'm open to feedback and will continue to try and make the program as useful as possible within my abilities.

So its like i said,  it might actually work... its also a bit weird google doesn't seem to think about something like that, it should be trivial for them, and yes, scam messages on youtube are certainly a problem that exists,  also on other platforms of course.

Well, for this purpose it might be besides the point,  but generally its a good idea to call things by their names, or find appropriate new words to describe something,  also to avoid situations like this, because a lot of these scammers appear indeed not to be "bots" and calling them that doesn't exactly help and can be misleading,  especially considering the victims of such messages often are supposedly rather naive,  because its otherwise rather hard to imagine someone falling for these messages as they're usually rather blatant and obvious. 

Why not just call them "scammers"? Calling them "bots" somewhat blurs the lines,  of course doesn't help that some of them probably are actual bots lol (still scammers though) 

 

edit: just to clarify this if you still don't understand,  ive seen them commenting completely normal on a video, and *then* under the comment added the spam message... thats the dangerous ones, or they pretend to be "staff" or something... that is no "bot" and it can be really dangerous and misleading for unsuspecting victims to call them "bots" when they clearly aren't.

The report category on the LTT forum is "Bot spam" even though almost all of the spam on the forum is posted by actual people just copying and pasting off a script. It might not be correct but people will immediately recognise the type of spam you're referring to when you say "bot spam". It's also a really good way to differentiate between different types of "spam", whether that's [bot] spam (malicious spam/scams/dodgy links/fake websites/etc), advertising (someone promoting a legitimate website, referral links, or some kid promoting their minecraft youtube channel to get more views), or post spam (flooding a bunch of similar or pointless messages).

 

For example these are two types of spam posted on LTTs latest video...

Both I would consider to be spam, but if someone said "bot spam" I'd immediately know they were referring to the first example.

^ this. What ThioJoe's script is trying to do is stop a certain type of spam comments, whether it's posted by a person or bot is irrelevant to the goal or how the script functions.

 

I don't think ThioJoe's script is going to have any real impact on spam on youtube, even for channels using it. It might make things a little bit easier for content creators when it comes to cleaning up the spam on their videos but in the grand scheme of things it's going to do absolutely nothing to stop the spammers, especially if they're quick to adapt to bypass filters and change tactics. It's unlikely that spammers will give up if it becomes too difficult. Either they won't even notice or care that their comments are being removed after posting them or they'll switch to more elaborate and deceptive methods to bypass detection.

 

I do hope that this will at the very least shine a spotlight on Youtube's inadequate spam prevention and force Youtube to actually give proper tools to creators to help fight spam. It's unbelievable to me that Youtube knows exactly what video to recommend to me at 1am to keep me watching just a little bit longer but has no idea how to detect and delete very obvious spam accounts that are going around to dozens of channels posting the same obvious spam messages.

 

A good start would be by youtube giving creators an option that reports an account for spam to youtube, bans them from commenting on their channel, and deletes all of their previous comments on the channel all in one click. Accounts should have trust ratings and if enough creators report the account it should require Youtube to suspend/restrict the accounts ability to post or automatically place their comments on channels in the "possible spam" approval queue that require the creators approval to be made visible on the channel at least until the account is reviewed by youtube or additional account verification is provided. Those tools really need to come from Youtube though and that won't happen until Youtube takes proper responsibility for spam on their platform.

points taken but i still think my criticism of the language is valid, sure everyone who posts here or watches "tech videos" etc will know what is meant by "bot" but it can still be misleading as i explained for someone not into this jargon.  

why not just call them scammers?  that would differentiate them enough from spammers, which often is really a different category aka more trolling than actual malicious intent (even if its still annoying of course)

 

But "scammer" is pretty straightforward forward with little disambiguation.

 

I mean, try to imagine you're a youtube top brass and hear there's a "bot problem" and look into it,  seeing no bots anywhere,  i would immediately think "wtf" and put it on the shelf, i think, if im not familiar with this language. 

 

(that's besides the point that i would still want to look into the spam/scam issue which surely gets reported additionally)

yeah, i agree,  this is also why i asked how it works, which i wouldn't have an idea how to even ask hadn't he explained it fairly well in the first place. because if that program - going by the *name* of how its portait at least would look for "bots" there would be little hope for success... but it doesn't do that, it looks for malicious urls, phone numbers,  etc, that's kinda how you have to do it and as i said i think this can actually work, provided it works as intended. 

 

And yes, its baffling youtube doesn't have better tools, etc, in fact they should just block all of this content... its hard to imagine that they're really incapable of doing so.

 

imo this shouldn't be on the creators / uploaders, but with this "anti bot tool" the situation can hopefully be improved and yes, i think there's a high chance youtube will finally notice (and probably steal i mean ... "copy" this tool lol)

Dont worry about it man. i have seen way "worse looking" code and these have been used in production level softwares. Many people in this industry has big ego and would write some of the most convoluted and complex code with design patterns 10 layers deep just to do one simple task. public static void main arg arg abrstarct factory generic implements xyz decorator return zyx singletons. Always makes me cringe anytime i see it. Good code is easy to read and easy to understand while sacrificing little in flexibility. that is about it.

I actually downloaded and test out his anti-spammer. I create my brand new email for that, spamming "WINDOWS XP IS BETTER THAN WINDOWS 10" or "WINDOWS XP IS BETTER THAN WINDOWS 11" and it keep randomly changing from Windows 98 to Windows 11.


The result? The anti-spamming script (I hate to call it a BOT) automatically delete ~96% all of the spam comments in 3 video that I spammed. Impressive right? (Oh, some comments it just leaves there)

Anti-malware, for free. (not NavaShield of course)
