Great video absolutely destroyed by a lie of a title discrediting everything in the video. Not everyone has friends with full soldering stations they can borrow and use. Now they are faced with purchasing a soldering iron and supplies which probably totals most keyboards someone without a soldering iron would own. It seems like the titles are drawing in an audience that the videos are not applicable for. Which then raises the question as to why Linus does what he does. Is it purely for money at this point?

He said you don't need a full station, just a soldering iron.  This isn't super delicate soldering.

And yeah, enough people have irons that you can probably find one.

Good to know that puting a keyboard in the dishwasher ended up resulting in a few dead keyboards and is actually a bad idea, I was considering it based on the video from 2 years ago.

I sure am glad LTT moved into a huge office/studio space years ago, otherwise they might still have to shoot videos in a kitchen in 2021. 

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Watch this space for further truths people need to hear.

This repair could've been done for $0 too, if you had desoldered the Pause Break key (because who uses that, other than people rebinding it to a macro) and soldered that in place for the 'E'-key. That would've removed any doubt - whether measurable or sub-conscious - about the new keyswitch feeling different too, since that keyswitch under Pause Break is from the same batch of MX-keys, just not used (at all possibly).

 

A pump like the one shown in the video is a bit annoying to work with, but if you add some new fresh solder (preferably leaded for easiness) to the keyswitch connections it could've definitely worked. I say that out of experience, since I used a pump like that the other because I had to desolder two dozens keyswitches on a custom PCB (did assembly in the wrong order, oops!).

 

Anyways, great video! I love seeing these 'DIY'-videos, that shows there is an alternative to tossing an otherwise perfectly fine working product by repairing it!

 

Also informative to know the dishwasher keyboard thing isn't a good idea after all.

I've seen a dishwasher work for motherboards of older computers, because capacitors leaked all over it, but I can imagine a keyboard has many more places where water can stay without fulling drying.

To be fair, it's not like the title says "How you and everyone else in the world can fix a $150 keyboard", it's talking about how they fixed it for $1. Of course that is not counting the equipment, supplies, time, etc. involved, but that seems fair to me. They only needed to purchase a component with the price tag of $1, they had all the other stuff already.

It's more a "do a repair and talk about it"-video, rather than a "tutorial; here is how you fix a keeb for $1"-video to me.

 

I think it's fair to say most people have some easy way to get access to a soldering iron, whether that be from a friend or family member, school or place of work or even just a hobby workplace which are pretty common place nowadays. But that may of course be a jaded experience from me, as someone interested in soldering I probably pay more attention to where soldering irons may be than most people in the world.

The problem with the diswasher is the added salt to "soften" the water, atleast where I'm from and salty water is not nice to electronics. You could rinse the washed keyboard with distilled water. The next thing would be the switches, they are not watertight and the water would take ages to evaporate.

Some soldering tips:
- You don't need flux for something as this, you have flux in your "flux" core solder wire.
- Use leaded solder (for privat use no problem and you shouldn't care)
- There are cheap soldering irons out there without a base station for about $20, which will do the job for this good enough (and for perspective the Hakko FX-888D is quite cheap for a soldering iron)

Then:
1. Add some fresh solder wire to pins.
2. Grab the switch from his top side (pull slightly) with one hand and switch with your soldering iron from one solder joint to the other (heating both in the process)
3. Pull the switch
4. Clean the holes with some desoldering wire (if its hard to clean add some fresh first solder)
5. Add the new switch

I feel this is the best kind of Linus Tech Tips. It fits well the RRR: Reuse Repair Recycle.

 

I want to share that you can do the same thing Linus did with his wife's Keyboard with mice. The left and right click are the easiest to break, you can feel they are failing when:

  • A single click registers as a double click
  • A click does not register
  • During Drag&Drop the item releases early

Pretty much every mouse I had uses the same form factor of switches, so when a switch fails I transplant a good switch from an old cheap mouse to my daily driver (the quality of the contact may be lower). I don't know about fancy gaming mice, before replacing the switch look up what switch it has inside. For a couple of year my daily driver has been a vertical mouse that is easier on my wrist, I had already replaced the right click last year, and today I replaced my left click.

 

I thought I share photos of the repair with you since Linus did a switch replacement. I solder all the times, so this is easy for me. The solder joints on a switch are easy, big and well spaced, the most care you must take is on not overheating the contact too long, since it can melt the insides of the switch (Do it at your own risk).

My posts says multiple things, what do you mean by "a title could have said that" (specifically, what does 'that' refer to)?

As is, I think the title is very fair. It's his wife's keyboard, he repaired it using $1 of parts. If anything, the thumbnail is unfair, the keyboard wasn't split apart like shown in the thumbnail.

I think it's fair to say most people have some easy way to get access to a soldering iron, whether that be from a friend or family member, school or place of work or even just a hobby workplace which are pretty common place nowadays. But that may of course be a jaded experience from me, as someone interested in soldering I probably pay more attention to where soldering irons may be than most people in the world.

I think people in this day and age need to take the content as the learning message and not the title - title and thumbnails are literally designed to make you click while still being relevant to the topic.
