What do you do with your old PC's??

Weezy

Hey everyone

I have a CyberPower built PC from I think 10-12 years ago. It boots up fine (albeit slow of course), and the screen resolution actually looks pretty good. What would you do with it?

- CoolerMaster Centurion case, USB 2's

- Asus P6T Motherboard LGA 1366

- Intel Core i7 920 2.67 Ghz

- ATI Radeon HD 4800 series - 2 DVI connections

- Corsair 2048MBx3 1333Mhz 1.5v RAM (CM3X2G1333C9D6)

- Windows Vista Home Premium

- CyberPower 800w ATX PS model ULT-XF800S

- Liquid cooling

- etc..

Pretty sure no commercial higher end hd 4000 had VGA, you mean DVI?

Seems pretty high end, could probably get 200-400ish as a retro gaming PC if good condition depending on what the market is in your area

Oh shoot, you're right, DVI - will correct it now

There’s a lot of different things you can do, it just depends on specific needs or who you know. If you have a relative or friend or something that needs a daily usage machine, an older PC will do fine. You can part it out and sell it on eBay, or all together, or the same but locally.
You could always recycle it, but I recommend going through more PC oriented recycling channels for that if you have any available near you.

When my haswell system met it’s EOL I pretty much just parted the extra components out online (2nd gpu, 2x8gb ddr3) and gave it to my younger cousins, who are still using it today to play Roblox and GTA V.

I checked with family and friends, but everyone either has something newer/faster, uses laptops exclusively, or just uses their phone. Wouldn't mind being able to grab a few dollars for it, or I'll just donate it

Donate, or keep as maybe a home media pc. I'm sure Windows 10 works alright on it.

I have an older pc where I donated the case, but kept the parts (like the cpu, motherboard, etc.). I like to have backups.

I either sell them per component or whole assembled platforms (mobo+CPU+RAM+cooler). So far I sold only one with case and everything, but without storage drive and PSU.

If you want some cash, list it on FB Marketplace for something.  Either remove the drive(s) or wipe and reinstall windows.

I sell it. I never let my hardware get too old, so it doesn't lose relevancy.

For something like that, I'm not even sure I'd try selling it. Especially with water cooling. Donating it to something like The Salvation Army would probably be best.

When I got my current computer, I sold my old one that had i5 3570k and RX 580.

My family is financially intelligent (unlike 80% of the people here), so they upgrade when it can actually benefit them, not when it's a big change that does nothing

for example, my father bought an SSD when they were reasonably priced so that the PC would boot in 5 seconds instead of 5 minutes, but he still uses an i7-8700 and a gtx-1080 since it's easily fast enough to do his work, he doesn't upgrade every 2 years, so we only have 3 or 4 PCs around the house, one of which is the good PC, one of which is what I use to run my second monitor, one of which is the one my mother uses, and now that I think about it, I think the fourth one was scrapped to make my "second monitor PC"

Tubs in the garage. I've told myself I'll send them to the appropriate recycling center, but I just never get around to it.

So in tubs they go.

I try to hand-me-down pc's to other functions in my house and keep using them for as long as possible.  GX660R is now a work PC.  GT60 is a media PC.  P35x is the current gaming laptop and will get demoted if/when i get a newer one.

The only exception to this is my wife insisting that I get an RTX 2080 Omen....for her to do finances on.   Because "Get something as high end as you would use", just in case I end up wanting/needing to game on it.  You heard that right.  My actual gaming laptop is worse than the gaming laptop my wife has for 0 gaming.  FML.

p.s.

I chalk this up to her previously using my old Sager 8662 that couldn't not stop shitting its own GPU--and her resultant revulsion to "cast offs".

Well i turn one in a private Samba server just for archive reasons, which i normal use from time to time.

Some old pcs can be used as telephone station, you can run opensource asterisk server on it.

you can make a video tape recording station.

or you can just post on public board that you give a pc or even try to give it away to your local school.

Get creative with it. I believe most older electronics can fill a need after some TLC whether it's for you or someone else. If all else fails, donate it to a goodwill or put it up for free on your local classifieds or marketplace.
