I have been trying to join the discord server but it directs me back to my friend's dm who sent me the link.

The Discord server has several protections built in. I don't remember off the top of my head all of them, but I believe it must be an account older than 6 months as well as a phone number attached.

Theyre pretty trigger happy with the bans because they have a large enough userbase where it’s not worth investigating or really caring if some random person vanished from the community one day.

It sucks but it’s common practice for basically any large online community of any variety.


LTT discord isn’t that great anyway, from my experience it’s full of elitist losers, most of which don’t even watch the channel or view the forum, they’re just in there to talk about how their experience with computers so much more valid than yours.

I never found Discord Servers that end up being thousands of members large to ever be good. You easily get lost in the crowd and every one just ends up talking over each other because of the limited number of channels. 

 

And like you said, those on the forum tend to be more welcoming with few exceptions. Some folks from the Linux crowd can to be as you mention, a bit elitist with their opinions when it comes to topics about Windows/ macOS. And in many cases, unnecessarily elitist.

This is, I think, why Linus and Luke were initially against having Discord or IRC channel. Too many people, moderation would need to be stricter than is nice and the resulting things. Probably caved after Jake promissed to take lead on that, and see some benefits of having it. What those were, I'm not sure.

 

The other problem is fan culture in general. Especially younger fans think that forums, twitter or discord is way to connect to the team on personal level. Asking question or connecting directly. When it still isn't.

To illustrate the point, A few years back I was perm banned due to a report to mods from another user, the user completely misunderstood the situation where I was speaking to another person in the voice channel, not them, we were talking about specific game mechanics and the reporting user thought I was being rude. Spoke to mods and got unbanned because I hadn't done anything wrong and was talking to someone else (who wasn't offended nor supportive of the ban since I was just talking about game mechanics), as soon as the reporting user saw me back (on the same account) I was reported again and banned for ban evasion, after I had been unbanned.... 

I enjoyed the LTT Discord while I was there but dear god, there are some moderation issues.

Tens of thousands you mean? I am in one server with a few thousand people and only like 20 or so active. Everybody knows eachother
