Why hasn't Linus started a Linux channel yet

A low effort spinoff channel that focuses on linux could be cool. I'm not sure it'll ever happen, but I'd support it.

I love LTT it's my favorite channel and love the people there and what they do , after switching to Linux and seeing how awesome Linus Linux vids are with Anthony I are really wanted an active Linux exclusive channel with Anthony as a host like what he did with Mac address

And I'm not the only one look at the likes an comments on those videos , so c'mon Linus make it happen

I would imagine it's because the amount of views they would get relative to the amount of effort they'd have to invest makes it a bad business decision to do so. 

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Watch this space for further truths people need to hear.

Because LMG doesn't need to make a channel for everything. yes Anthony is clearly very knowledgeable when it comes to Linux, but there is already so many linux channels out there that go into a LOT of detail that it doesn't really make sense for Linus to go into that field.

 

What you should be doing is supporting the creators that are already doing it. if Linus did create a linux channel, how do you think that would affect the smaller channels trying to get off the ground?

LTT is still pretty heavily gaming focused, even though the channel has branched out quite a bit. I've often wished for more productivity focused builds/content, but I realize that's not really their focus.

 

Linux gaming has come a long way, mind you, and LTT has done videos on that, in fact, but Windows is still where the majority of gamers are, and so that's going to be the primary focus.

Mainly because it would be just or mainly Anthony. And he is really busy. Linus has talked about this in one of the livestreams. Anthony specialises in long projects. There are good and bad sides of that. Good is that the videos are usually well researched, in depth and interesting. Bad being that they take lot of the time to prepare.

 

So Anthony doing maybe weekly video to New channel almost certainly means he doesn't do anything else.

I personally don't think Linux is usable for a wide enough audience, but it does catch my attention with it's breakthroughs. As a user if you require hours upon hours to constantly get things working which Linux does require, are you just using up time to get it working? This means very low amount of people watching the content that Anthony puts the effort in for, him attached to Linus is where he thrives better, he sparks interest rather than being a fully fledged solo channel.

 

What I am getting at is that yes Linux is very interesting, but still not user friendly at all and having only 1 person able to give in depth knowledge on what does what means that person is stretched to the demands of a certain audience wheras the Windows folk have multiple people to gloss over ideas and work arounds for certain tasks without the time consuming tinkering too because Windows is a much simpler platform to use.

LinusTechTips is all about clickbait content. They moved away from informational videos when they moved to the warehouse so most content you'll see is in your face over the top sponsored material. GamersNexus and Level1Tech provide videos with a lot more details targeted towards information rather than entertainment.

Anthony doesn't even give really "in depth" content, it's really content targeted people who don't know linux, or are just getting started with it.

 

There are other channels that really focus on more in-depth stuff, but that's a really niche case.

Because the hardcore Linux community who is probably the only ones who will watch those videos will probably bash it as much as the entire tech community blasted the Verge's PC building guide into orbit. The Linux community isn't the most welcoming to new comers, which is probably a reason why despite it's many upsides those in the community refuse to shut up about, most will still settle with Windows or MacOS. 

 

For instance... if you try to get any sort of help with Linux... if you don't know how to use the terminal, those in the know will just point and laugh.

TBH I think there is an unfortunate amount of elitism when it comes to people asking for tech help in general - though this is definitely more prominent on the Linux side of things. I think we should be as welcoming as possible to everyone who's asking for help, we all start somewhere. As annoying as someone not posting their specs on every single god damn thread can be when they have a problem.

 

And by this btw, I mean, a technically correct response to a support question that happens to be edgy or imply superiority, is not necessarily required, which I see a lot of.

This is another good point. Not only is the target audience small, the target audience is also virtually impossible to please. It's like asking why game developers don't make more arena shooters.

To add to this, while I'm certain Anthony more than earns his keep with the work he currently does, the whole "have Anthony host a Linux channel!" idea assumes Anthony would even WANT to change his workload to be the exclusive face of a channel that would have to upload multiple videos a week to be viable. It might not be more work but it's a very different style of work than focusing on long term projects in a variety of areas like he does now.

I am not sure if I expected to see this thread span over more than one page; but the answer is rather simple:

 

Linux, the OS, does not actually exist.

 

Linux is a kernel, or, according to the current stance of the Linux foundation and Wikipedia, it is now an OS family (os, like "Unix", or "an x86 OS"). For years they (the Linux Foundation and by extension Wikipedia) tried claiming Linux was "an OS", but I suppose they eventually gave up since evidently, no such thing exists. An OS family is a collection of OSes that have something in common. In the case of "Linux", they only have a single thing in common: Linux Kernel.

Now, making a YouTube channel on such an obscure and complex piece of software (the Kernel) that has a close to 30 million SLOCs big source code is not necessarily a good idea. It would be very challenging to make entertaining content.

 

And you're probably going to tell me: "we're in 2021, now 'Linux' means 'an OS'; and there are plenty of vulgarization topics that could make for great videos.". Yes... but no.

That would first of all require LTT to pick one, or at the very most a few, "Linux distributions" (or "distros") and make content for those, completely disregarding the rest of the FOSS landscape.

After that, given any breaking changes introduced by their distribution of choice, LTT would have to amend/edit their videos to at least include a disclaimer that this video isn't up to date anymore.

The videos would also have to deal with many, many assumptions on the user side; and if they do not, combinatorics would cause the complexity of such videos to literally explode. Making them either useless for most (e.g. only useful for a subset of the "Linux users" during a limited time) or extremely long, and needing constant recurring care.

Then, after that, it would also expose them to a LOT of criticism, no matter what they decide to say; because FOSS users are opinionated like that (but all very differently). Try an "emacs or vi?" discussion on some Linux-themed forum to see what I mean. That would be a literal troll/flame war generator, with never ending debates, dragging for months and getting needlessly overly technical.

And, finally, the user pool of "Linux" is too heterogeneous for LTT to easily target the majority (if there is such a thing) of them on any subject.

 

No matter how you put it, "Linux" does not exist in such a tangible way that would allow a YouTube channel to strive. But I can see how making some videos on specific topics once in a while, and going for "safe" vulgarisations (e.g. "You can either select MBR or GPT" - this is hardware/firmware dependent, thus you can rather safely assume it), can totally be beneficial to the main channel.

Isn't windows three-sixty-five just a more recent version of windows three-eleven?

Try an "emacs or vi?" discussion on some Linux-themed forum to see what I mean. That would be a literal troll/flame war generator, with never ending debates, dragging for months and getting needlessly overly technical.

And, finally, the user pool of "Linux" is too heterogeneous for LTT to easily target the majority (if there is such a thing) of them on any subject.

 

No matter how you put it, "Linux" does not exist in such a tangible way that would allow a YouTube channel to strive. But I can see how making some videos on specific topics once in a while, and going for "safe" vulgarisations (e.g. "You can either select MBR or GPT" - this is hardware/firmware dependent, thus you can rather safely assume it), can totally be beneficial to the main channel.

Nope. The GNU/Linux naming controversy exists, too, but it is an entirely different topic.

 

Linux works with a lot of different software, most of which (by count, not by popularity) isn't GNU (since GNU, while being the most popular software collection, usually provides only one implementation for a given utility/concept).1

 

And because I don't want to deal with people endlessly discussing what I said; I'm gonna prevent any further discussion and directly go ahead by quoting an example2 of a single piece of GNU software and several alternatives: the GNU libc. There. This table shows 3 alternatives, but there are many, many more (this list, while more complete, is by no mean exhaustive).

 

This is how it is, there are at least two or three (often more) implementations of anything (try init systems...), and one of the many advantages of FOSS is the freedom to cherry pick any software you want and assemble an "OS" that way.

 

 

1) Nota Bene: I am talking here about the GNU software collection. Not the GNU Licenses. Software outside of the GNU software collection can be GNU-Licensed; however this isn't even remotely discussed here. So please don't move the goalposts with that confusion.

2) It takes only a single counter example to prove a theory wrong.

Isn't windows three-sixty-five just a more recent version of windows three-eleven?

which was also a stupid idea. They are still covering Apple products on the main channel, so i don't even understand the point of their new one.
