Summary

A Tesla employee recently tweeted about Tesla job openings for Linux game developers. It appears Tesla is looking to get involved in the Linux gaming space, similarly to Valve.

My thoughts

I wonder what exactly Tesla has in mind with this. Linux already runs as their car’s infotainment systems, so they want games there as well now? Either way it’s great news for Linux and other open source gaming projects.

Why would anyone assume Tesla is making games for linux like a studio? We all know it's for the bigass infotainment screen in Teslas for gimmicky marketing.

They've already had basic games for quite a while, obviously you can only access them while parked when waiting for someone or such.

They are just hiring Linux dev to make gamer like interface on the Tesla's table "infotainment" system. Coz Tesla is hip and for young people and has AC controlls burried under 15 submenus... Now it'll have "gamer" vomit all over it too. Probably RGB as well!

I wonder how powerful the car is in terms of GPU power, which will likely be the bottleneck. I assume from the existing games that it is similar to Intel/AMD integrated graphics, so whatever games that are being added to current cars would not be that realistic/graphically intensive.

Good news is with the battery you can go out camping, keep the heat or A/C running all day and night, and play some games, watch some Netflix/Hulu/Twitch/Youtube and have enough to drive back. Oh, and BTW, the sound system is amazing!

this is what i thought till i got bored on a long drive... 😛 

all the games will not load or display a thing saying nope the car is in drive EXCEPT Solitaire, there is a little legal window that pops up saying hit yes if your the passenger basically and you can play solitaire. But by that logic other single player games should be allowed like chess or backgammon, (both have 1 player mode).

Maybe they need game developers because “game” will just be the system GUI. It is not a first time that game engine is being used for GUI which has nothing to do with gaming.

I shudder even thinking about cars in the future coming with something like Scaleform UI. Those clunky menus developers always integrate into their titles are one of my biggest pet-peeves in games.

Care to clarify on the autopilot that can't stop?  [A note, they have now moved away from radar in favor of just cameras because radar was giving things like false positives causing phantom braking and conflicting data in the model.  The newer autopilots seem to be quite a bit better at driving as well, but as always autopilot is meant as a tool to aid the driver not replace one completely...at least not at this time]  If you are talking about people tricking the system into driving, while they do things like sleeping...well that is on the person's own stupidity not Teslas.

 

The fit and finish, it's important to note that that has been improving by leaps and bounds every year.  The vehicles coming off of the GigaBerlin factory should be leaps and bounds better, as they are using the Giga Press for the front and back (compared to having more components, which introduced 0.1 mm gaps which then would spiral out to things like door misalignments etc).  Just like the Model 3 press, it went from 70 pieces down to 1 piece.  The Berlin vehicles should have better precision just because of the die castings alone (The Texas vehicles should be similar when that eventually goes online, and at that point I assume the other plants will be retrofitted).

 

It's important to remember that it was only founded 17 years ago, production of the Roadster was only 12 years ago, and mass production (Model S) was only started 9 years ago.  The fit and finish of a 9 year old product, where they are trying to turn into mass production isn't that bad (considering that the presses they are using are not cheap and require time to build)

Ah yes. Tesla, the car manufacturer that can't sell cars with good fit and finish, and is being run by a once great-and-visionary CEO who now just tweets about rando shit. The manufacturer, that can't sell an 8th of the cars of it's rivals, but stlll has a higher evaluation than it's rivals. The manufacturer, which will focus on putting Cyberpunk on your car, so that you can do something, while the seat upholstering breaks.

Doesn't Tesla run the autopilot on an Nvidia GPU? If the games are only playable when parked/charging, it's certainly not needed for autopilot at that time.

I dont know about that. Also in AMD's computex keynote they stated that their gpus are going into teslas.

They replaced it by their own FSD hardware.

The AMD GPU is meant for the infotainment system, those things in a car need to be independent from one another.
