convince me that AIOs are better than what it was 5 years ago.

OCNewbee

So I just purchased a 9900ks. But my current case is a corsair 280x and I am using silver arrow 130. What I am worried about are thermals. I think I may have to either get a new case that fits a d15 or go back to an AIO.

Last time I used an AIO was around 5 years ago. It was a Corsair h100v2 and it had a leak and pump issues (made high pitched noise). Although the RMA was excellent, I promised myself that I would never use AIO again. But times have changed and I hope the AIOs are better. Can someone please reassure me that AIOs are safe and noise isn't that big of an issue?

There hasn't been any significant change in how AIOs work or are manufactured in the last 5 years. You were probably unlucky back then and more likely to get a better one if you buy now, but that's purely by chance.

Your current case has excellent airflow. No need to go crazy with cooling and such either. Try your silver arrow it's not a bad cooler. If temps are not as expected get a little better one. A sycthe fuma 2 fits and is better.

As for aio's. Well they'll still die after 3-5 years (live longer when you install them properly). As for leaks they figure that one out mostly. They aren't better than air coolers don't start thinking that. They are just a different form transporting heat to the heatsink that is about it.

Good AIO-s are not noticably better than good air coolers imo.

The Silver Arrow 130 should be a good one anyway.

I have a few good air coolers.. I did have an AIO (H100) that I used for a few years..

Just recently I was strongly considering one. I did actually buy a Galahad 240 in white.. but canceled the order.. still waiting for refund.

I just cant do it. These things are getting the same temps as my coolers. And I thought my fans were loud when they spooled up lol.. not like those AIOs lol 50db is insane. The stock fans on my H100 are loud too lol.. AIO would be good in a tiny case, or if you just want to stare at your hardware. Out of all of my Thermalright coolers, the new FC140 is easily the new top dog out of them by more than just a couple of c's.

My i9 9900k is using a Noctua NH-U15 with a single fan and stays cool even with a 5ghz all core overclock(1.27v).

My 5800x rig that I built recently has a EVGA 360mm AIO and it will be RMAed for noise soon. It does not need a 360mm AIO but I was planning to leave it on a test bench and large air coolers just get in the way.

My i9 10900k rig uses a Silverstone 360mm AIO and it is quite.  At first this i9 got a Dark Rock Pro 4 and it was not up to the task. It is the only rig I have that actually needs a 360mm AIO.

I think you would be fine with either a Noctua NH-D15 or a DRP4.

really? Corsair 280x along with other glass panel monstrosities are known to have poor air flows. I was able to sort of correct this by placing 10 noctua fans. Anyways, the max CPU height is 150 so silverarrow 130 was the only dual tower I could fit in here. 9900ks is supposed to arrive in 2~3 days. I may have to delid it to manage the thermals.

My H110i lasted me from 2014 to 2020 and if it fit in my new case I would have continued using it. Getting the right fan profile is key. With that thing, and the way I used it, Two 1200 PWM RPM fans always kept me cool. Ran at 50% unless water temp got above a certain temp (already forgot what that number was) then a curve from there. Thing ran quiet. Now I have an Artic II and it was literally just plug and play and noticeably quieter than the cooler it replaced

Is yours mesh front or not? If it isn't then yeah bad airflow but normally the 280x is mesh front.

I like that little setup.. its pretty sweet!

I took the mesh off of my Meshify C lol.. you can never have too much airflow 😄

Well you can but things would have to be quite extreme..

not sure why people are saying aios haven't changed. the idea of them hasn't but how they work under the hood has changed alot. better flowrate, less restrictions entering the pump/block, less noise, longer longevity, and overall better performance.

I do agree your silver arrow 130 is a solid cooler, but I love using an aio in the 280x.

My last build had an H100 running 4.5ghx on an i5 2500k. That computer still runs (albeit with some more pump noise).

Also if you really want to, you can cram a 280mm rad in the top of the 280X.

Thats a pointless test. Use a +200W oc load if you want to see differences.

The test in the video is a bit dissapointing sure. Yet the AIOs aren't much beter after a quarter of an hour 150W load or higher.

I think you are confused with some other case. All corsair 280x has front top and side glass panels.

These new AIO's should be able to take 200w. My old H100 choked on a lot more than that for a long time.
