5600x vs 5800X vs 5900X

Planning a new build for gaming at 1440p and casual (hobby) video editing.
I was planning on going with the 5800x but after seeing reviews about thermals and the LTT video, the impression I got was that the 5900x was a better value. At MSRP.
I'm coming from a 4770 (non K), I'd obviously want something much better but I would imagine the 5600x would be a massive improvement.  Will going to a 5800x or 5900x be that much of a price/perfomance gain again from the 5600x?
Prices are in AUD
5600x - $499
5800x - $668
5900x - $899

Cheers.

IPC is the same with all three, you just gain cores and threads with the increased dollar amount.

If you think you can often fill 16 threads, get the 5800X. The rest should be obvious from here.

Do you play simulators like BeamNG, Total War or Star Citizen? Those eat CPUs for breakfast and more cores are always welcomed regardless of display or GPU paired with it. Otherwise general games pretty much perform the same between all the 5000 Ryzen CPUs you can buy today, minor difference because of different clock speeds only.

Ofc 5600x has a problem of too few cores for those who might step into production or want to use the same CPU for a long time until something critical (like a motherboard) stops working

I'd get the 5900x because even though it's excess, you likely won't look back and wish you didn't get more than you needed.

it's much more likely you do the opposite

Yeah I love Total War.
Would you suggest the 5800x or 5900x then?

With the AI turned on you should see all the cores being utilized at the maximum all core frequency.

Lol, back when I had an i5 7400 my FPS would tank when I had more than 4-5 vehicles or had the AI turned on. Buying the 6C/12T Ryzen 5 2600X fixed those issues.

I think the OP will see a good improvement with any of the 3 CPU choices.

All the cores? We has a 2700X. I'll have to check it out. Seems to run pretty smooth though. Not even sure the FPS, it's on a 4K 55" TV.

He plays online and with AI pretty sure.

And yes, even the 5600X is going to spank the pants off a 4770 😛

As a 5600x owner I do have to say she is an absolute ripper. I don't need 8 cores but I could always use them.. but for what I do the 5600x is perfect. And its relatively easy to cool sorta 😄

No I was talking about the 5600. It is relatively easy to cool, its when you approach its limits she gets pretty warm. I chicken out in the mid 80s even though "they" say its good till 95.. Actually its good till 103 at least.. briefly 😄

You should see the temps from my first benchmark on the computer in my signature. I've since gotten the 5800x to stay under 80c in games.. On a low profile cooler.

Lol yes I believe it. I still want to get a 5800, I almost bought one. But I have a 3600XT and 5600X already.. need to dump them if I move up. I hear they run hot, but I welcome the heat.. I tame it with noise.

In that case, here's the X570 version. Same price as the MSI B550, a little bit more features in the chipset. And pretty much same color scheme. Tier A VRMs, should still hold up plenty fine with a 5800x. As far as how their PBO works and all that, I'm not sure.

https://www.varle.lt/pagrindines-plokstes/pagrindine-plokste-asus-prime-x570-p-am4-x570-4--10940141.html

As far as how overclocking would work on AMD, here's a couple of quick videos on how PBO works, and a really good undervolt guide. It is very possible to undervolt and get an overclock in return.

  Reveal hidden contents

Since I said I would work on explaining why the 5800x is so hot once I was at my computer.

  Hide contents

It has to do with how AMD is handling changes to their charged coupled devices(CCD). Each CPU core complex (CCX) allows for up to 8 cores and 16 threads. The 5600x will have 2 cores and 4 threads of it's CCX disabled. The CCX isn't being pushed as hard by default. The 5900X and 5950X will each have 2 sets of CCX, with the 5900X having 2c/4t disabled in each one. There's two there, but they're not working hard. This is why cooling a 5900x is almost closer to trying to cool a 5600x than a 5800x or 5950x. The 5950x will have 2 CCX with all cores and threads enable. It's a hot son of a gun. However, you are usually not using each CCX as hard due to how core and thread usage is handled.

Where people get into trouble with the 5800x specifically is that it's "Only" 8 cores and 16 threads. It should be easy to cool, but the components on the 5800x are working "harder" and producing more heat than they expect.

On paper, a 5600x and 5900x are the better values. That being said, AUD to USD says the 5800x is closest to our MSRP. I don't think any of those three will let you down. 5800x is a great CPU. Does really well at games, and you can leverage it for the video editing a little more depending on your software. That said, especially being in Aus, I'd do PBO if you go for the 5800x. With a little bit of tweaking it's surprisingly cool. It's just binned to run very hot from the factory.

I went with the 5800x on speculation. Both the Series X and PS5 are 8c16t. The 5800x is 8c16t. Once game devs stop making games for PS4 and Xbone, they're going to start favoring 8/16 I think. I don't think they'll go away from 4/8 or 6/12, but with consoles being what they are, I think 8/16 will be priority one.

It is easily capable of 130w.
