Well, even Trent Reznor kinda agrees with you.

while yes the song does fit him I just find the meaning translated to an older man who has had a very long life with some serious stuff and the whole empire of dirt is a lot more fitting as he is actually a legend in his field and in his last years all the money and influence meant nothing, he missed his wife and with that wow the lyrics written for a run of the mill drug problem suddenly become alive!
