What Happens If Your Laptop Don't Work At Airport?

This is obviously an off-topic post. If you had a flight before and you brought your laptop, you probably experienced where security guards require you to open the laptop in front of them. Let's say the battery has died or it just doesn't work at that time, can they refuse us to get to the flight?

I doubt it, if the laptop doesn't even turn on then how could it pose a danger?

In USA? They can refuse you for anything. Even if you do every thing perfect

if you have the charger with you plug it in.

let them search the entire laptop

I'm pretty sure they're just making sure that it's not an empty clam-shell with something inside of it: I've never been asked to turn my laptop on.

If they do, just explain that it's dead! Honestly, TSA doesn't care that much in my experience.

They would never request for a search like that. They will use an X-ray to see inside your laptop and if it look suspicious they will confiscate it or open it and look. The only time you will be requested to unlock a device and let security search it is at the border coming into the US. It's illegal but they will sometimes request to search through your phone. If you deny them you can't get in the US and you just have to keep pressuring them because it's technically not allowed but they can deny you for being suspicious

Worst thing that can happen is they will xray your device couple of times. If they suspect if you were smuggling something, they would do trace analysis and disassemble it.

The one time I had TSA even look at my laptop it was because it was my heavily modded X220 and several spare batteries. X-Ray showed it full of random wires and crap and I had like 3 spare 9 cells, a slice battery on the back and that just looked weird to them who don’t usually see laptops like that.

So they made me turn it on, I explained what the slice battery was and they said I could only bring one spare 9 cell, I left the other 2 in a locker until I came back.

But if I ever brought a chromebook or my old MacBook Pro they wouldn’t even glance at it.

I can tell you for sure  that in Turkey, China, Russia, Germany they will request you to power it on in front of them after they scanned it with an X-ray machine.

In Russia happened to me that my battery was dead and they asked me do i have a charger so i plugged it in and light showed up and that it. 

 

If you don't have a charger then probably they will need to open it, but not sure tho.

They're worried about people removing the batteries from laptops and filling the void with narcotics or explosives.

There's also separate issues with laptop batteries on planes, where there is a risk they can be damaged or overheat and cause a fire. That's why most batteries in laptops are limited to under 100Wh.

They also dislike anything that looks like it has a void inside it, so if you have an empty drive bay or a 2nd battery slot that's not filled they may actually give extra scrutiny. They're used to seeing a 'full' device. A nice TSA agent explained the thing about 'voids' when I got stopped a few times for a 'personal item'.

You explain why it doesn't work, if it's just a dead battery, they may ask you to plug it in, or take it apart to make sure there's nothing hidden inside.
