Final check before I order my parts..

Hi everyone!

I hope to order the parts for my first PC build this evening so I can start building soon. Because it's my first build, I want to be very sure that every part is compatible. I'm not planning on overclocking, but still choose the 10700K because I may upgrade my PC in the future. I also hope to get a GeForce RTX 3060 when it releases thursday. Till then, I'm using the integrated graphics and only use the PC for light tasks.

I would appreciate it if you could check the list below for any incompabilities.

Some specific questions:

  • Is the PSU overkill compared to the other parts? I checked a site where you could calculate the estimated wattage, and it advised me a 550W PSU. Just to be sure (and maybe for future upgrades) I picked a 750W PSU. Is there a risk of blowing up components when using a PSU with much higher wattage than the total wattage?
  • Maybe a dumb question: is the 3060 compatible with the motherboard? And in case it's sold out before I can get it: would a 3060Ti fit in for example?

First No you cant blow up your components with a higher watt psu than you need. Second, Online calculators are VERY inaccurate and I dont recommend using them. Everything else looks good at a glance but I would get some other opinions 🙂

Thank you in advance!

What do you plan to do with the build? If you're gaming I really wouldn't go for it. Also a 80hz 1080p monitor .... ?

I am NOT a professional and a lot of the time what I'm saying is based on limited knowledge and experience. I'm going to be incorrect at times.

No its not. Power supply wattage calculates are inaccurate and should not be relied on for choosing a power supply. The power supply will only output the proper wattage/voltage that is required by the system.

Yes it's compatible. The graphics card use the PCIe interface.

That will work as well.

Any reason for going Intel?? AMD Ryzen will offer more performance per buck over Intel at the current moment. Otherwise, it looks like a decent system.

100% Agree, even with current pricing, Ryzen is still the best bang for the buck.

Aha, thanks! So the PSU is a good choice, right?

Yeah, I don't really have a specific reason for preferring Intel. As I'm using the PC for gaming (FS2020, Minecraft, Farming Sim 19, etc.) and sometimes photo editing or video rendering, would AMD make a big difference? If so, what AMD processor would equal an i7-10700K (without overclocking)?

Yes, the PSU is a great choice and is a Tier A PSU; which is one of many highly recommended PSUs, especially when dealing with Nvidia Ampere cards due to high transient loads.

I would try and get a B450 motherboard with a Ryzen 5600X. That will serve you well for what you are doing. Now, if you need the extra cores, go for something like a 5800X. If you can't find any of these around and depending on how long you have to wait, get a Ryzen 3600 or settle for a 3700X.

If you're located near any local computer stores that sell components, check with them to see if they have any Ryzen 5000 series CPUs. I was at my local Micro Center over the weekend and they had them in stock.

Here is a great MB from Gigabyte. Gigabyte has some of the best customer care around if something were to fail. This MB has a great feature set for the price. https://pcpartpicker.com/product/43BTwP/gigabyte-b450-aorus-pro-wifi-rev-10-atx-am4-motherboard-b450-aorus-pro-wifi-rev-10

You also have the MSI B450 Tomahawk MAX  as that is also a great pick to choose from as well. Depends on if OP wants a motherboard with WiFi/Bluetooth capabilities or not.

Here is a great X470 MB if you wanted the upgraded chipset with (possibly) a longer upgrade compatibility: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/CXvqqs/msi-x470-gaming-plus-max-atx-am4-motherboard-x470-gaming-plus-max

That's not a bad choice as well. Just know that between the 400 and 500 series motherboards, this will be the end of Socket AM4. 400 series boards are supporting 5000 series processors provided that the motherboard manufacturers will update the BIOS with them. 500 series might be more favorable for SAM (Smart Access Memory) and PCIe 4.0. AMD Ryzen 6000 or 7000 series CPUs (whatever nomenclature they are going with next) will be on a new socket type.

I agree that that is an awesome MB and I personally have used the non MAX variant at a place I volunteer every week for a couple years now. It has been rock solid except for some lightly noticeable noise from the internals bleeding into the internal/included DAC. Probably should get an external amp, just the org and I haven't made it a priority and honestly it's only noticeable when nothing is playing and thus should be muted during those times anyway.

True it does depend on whether @Matt04 decides to do any overclocking as the X470 chipset does seem to be better at doing overclocking reliably. Although you are totally right, you really have to buy for what is available now and not the possibility of an upgrade in the future. Buy for now, upgradablity is a possible bonus.

For gaming I would take this instead

That being said, 11th gen intel CPUs are coming next month which have at least a 19% IPC improvement iirc over 10th gen and will probably outperform ryzen 5000 slightly while being cheaper depending on supply and demand.

You don't NEED 8 cores if you'll be gaming or gaming and streaming, realistically 6 cores and hyperthreaded 6 cores at that is well enough. i7s and i9s are mostly useful for work, while an i5 can oc and perform at or outperform a 10900k's gaming performance.

Edit: Btw, you're being very generous with that RTX 3060 price, I would say 700€ head-way is best for that as a STARTER price with today's retailer scalping and mining.

I'm a little bit confused now, though, haha :-).

So if I want to get more out of my bucks, I should go for a Ryzen 5600X with a MSI B450 Tomahawk MAX , right?

I'm indeed not planning on overclocking yet. Maybe in the future, when I have more experience with PC building and want to get the most out of it.

To return to my first configuration, I know I maybe won't get the most out of my money, but does the overall performance do the job for mid/high-range gaming/streaming and rendering?

p.s. Sorry for the bad English sometimes, It's not my native language.

If I had to build a new PC right now, that is the way I would probably go, although I am a little biased towards Intel as their platforms just work.

Overall, your original system will work great for what you are expecting otherwise. One thing I overlooked was possibly the addition of a HDD for bulk storage as 500GB will fill up quickly on the SSD with Windows installed.

The original build is actually pretty good, but personally I would get ryzen as you won't notice any difference in performance and you will be able to save a buck, pound, euro, or what have you 😂. If you ever did need more power, you can always upgrade with am4 to a better CPU. As far as motherboards go, I would look at the two suggested motherboards and pick the best feature set for you. X470 is a higher quality chipset so if you like the feature set and price of that MB, go with it.

Any other monitor choices out there??? 1080 at 75Hz is pretty ballsy for today's standards that @Brok3n But who cares? pointed out as well. I don't know the conversion rates, but I can find a 144Hz/165Hz 1080 for cheaper than what I think you'll be paying for, unless there is a monitor shortage as well!

Any other monitor choices out there???

If you wanted a seriously way better monitor here is a great one: https://www.amazon.com/AOC-27G2-Frameless-Adjustable-Guarantee/dp/B07WVN6CWT/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=aoc%2B27g2&link_code=qs&qid=1614029199&sourceid=Mozilla-search&sr=8-2&tag=mozilla-20&th=1

It is a bit more, but way, way, better.

Not sure how your going to get a 3060 right now. Getting a gpu will be hard!

You're right. I'm probably not gonna get one soon.. But I'll try it and otherwise save a little bit to buy a better, more expensive one.
