Cheap PC For Old Games

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): 

 

I play the current AAA games on my PS5 but really enjoy older games such as the fallout 3 and new vegas and various games from that time. I'm looking to build a pc for gaming on older games and maybe even look at games like arma 3 or day Z.

 

Any advice on what parts to buy would be amazing, this PC is a lockdown project so more then happy to use a mix of preowned and new parts, and I'm not overly fussed about the appearance so cheap case and no RGB don't bother me.

What's the used market like in your area? At that pricepoint, you'd be losing out on a lot of performance if you went with all new parts. You should look at getting an older pre-built PC like a Dell OptiPlex (offices are always liquidating tons of them), and throwing a cheap boot SSD and a decent GPU in it.

Old optiplex plus a used gpu, sub 250$.

Something like an optiplex 790 with an i5 2400 and a low profile gt 1030 (or a variety of other low power options if you get a full width MT model and not a slim one.

That will play those games just fine at 1080p higher settings.

Used market is very bad, anything pre built is stupidly expensive, however lots of parts available, there's a AMD Fx 4300 for £15 like I just don't know

Im looking to make a PC for playing older games such as Fallout 3 and New Vegas and other games of that era, I want to make the thing from scratch as a lockdown project using a mix of used and new parts. Any advice of what parts to try and pick up would be amazing, prices where I'm from is very strange as a used Intel 4690K is almost double a new Ryzen 3200g. There are good deals though just not sure what I'm looking for and what parts to buy.

I'd not get that case tho it's horrible. Also this thing doesn't have a gpu.

 

 

OP basically the cheapest way to do this is get like a i7 2000 3000 4000 ... series office dell with 8gb of ram and possibly an ssd (always add in later for cheap) + a random used gpu and depending on the gpu a psu upgrade.

Honestly it's been a pretty crap cpu since it's existance as even pentiums were better. Also 15 pounds sure but you still need a board ram and all the other stuff. Might as well just get a i7 dell from ebay and slap a gpu in it. Beyond better than what a 760k can ever hope to do.

This is the Athlon x4 760k? No, I wouldn't buy it. 

 

I'd look at some combination of a 2012/13 Dell Optiplex on ebay. If you're lucky, you'll find one under $50 with a 2nd or 3rd gen i5, and 8gb of RAM. Many offices will actually throw these away, you can find them for free without too much effort, although with the current COVID situation I'd understand if you'd rather just order stuff on ebay.

 

Even used GPU prices are unreasonably inflated right now, but with your remaining budget, try to find a GTX 1050 for as cheap as possible.

I have a Athlon x4 860k, it's not too great, but coming from a low-mid end laptop from 2013, it's quite good

I meant 760k, the 860k is basically the same... But any PC game can essentially be made to run on anything, so I don't doubt it.

I can run csgo quite smoothly, rust and gta 5, not so much, but still is playable. Will upgrade my system asap

GTA V is one of the best-optimized games out there, and it's 8 years old. If your CPU has problems on GTA V of all things, then it's woefully outdated. 

 

The best thing about the 860k was overclocking... Did you do that?

Yeah, I OCd it to 4ghz, this mobo isn't good for OCing, it's a A68HM-K. And this cpu doesn't actually have a way to monitor temps, so I have to use the mobo sensor, idk where it is, but it must be somewhere near the cpu, as it gets to like 51°C (sometimes more) before throttling from prime95 smallest FFTs. In cpu-z and  in most games it doesn't throttle. Haven't tried the one game which throttled with my old case, the new case has a lot better cooling.

right now, you can get a i5 3770 in my area for 50$. Or a 5800x for like 700$

The intel i3 10100f. It cost around £80 on amazon. It has 4 cores, 8 threads and is very fast. I did a post on here about it recently. It's the best bang for the buck atm and ive used them in a few rigs ive built recently.

£80 will just about get you a 2600(x) from aliexpress

 

Its on par with or slightly faster than the i3 above (depending on memory used, but the i3 needs a top end board to use fast ram, the ryzen does not), and has more cores which will help a lot in productivity type workloads.
