Titanfall update may be incoming at 1080p

Titanfall developer Respawn’s lead engineer Richard Baker has confirmed that an update could be on the horizon that bumps up gameplay resolution from 792p to 1080p.

“We’re going to experiment. The target is either 1080p non-anti-aliased or 900p with FXAA. We’re trying to optimize… we don’t want to give up anything for higher res. So far we’re not 100 per cent happy with any of the options, we’re still working on it. For day one it’s not going to change. We’re still looking at it for post-day one. We’re likely to increase resolution after we ship.”

According to Baker, the challenge now is in trying to get a lot of Titanfall’s particle- and physics-related effects working more in parallel. With all of the pre release hype that had built up, any performance issues that hadn’t been fully ironed out with a possible 900p or 1080 p release could have been a disaster. This is especially fortunate as end users will get the satisfaction of substantial post release improvements, which cant be said about many multi-platform titles. Not bad, especially considering that TitanFall might have helped Microsoft sell an additional 1 million Xbones according to this article....not bad at all

I mean this is crap. The so called "Next Gen" consoles can't even run a game based on Source Engine at 1080p wiith AA? Even a R7 260x averages well above 40 with those settings on PC and a build with a R7 260x can be build for same price as an xbox one and it will perform better.

Ya I can't believe they couldn't get source engine running at 1080p and 60fps. That's almost hard to believe.

1080p max settings with AA on titanfall my GTX 480 can't handle it,goes down to ~10-15fps.

The GTX 480 is on par more or less an R7 270X/7870.

Titanfall takes a huge framebuffer with certain settings, mainly the texture setting.

So depending what texture setting they're using on Titanfall, it's too surprising that it can't run with 1080p and AA

When the game was in development they said a key reason for choosing the source engine was to achieve 60fps on the consoles.

Monitor? Keyboard? Mouse? Speakers/headset? thought so.

It's not possible to build a PC for the same price as a console and have a similar experience.

Who would have thought that FXAA on consoles is demanding enough to make it drop from a 1080p title to 900p, I mean... its FXAA, a 1x AA post processing algorithm.

I'd actually expected consoles AntiAliasing to be in the form of 2xMSAA or 2xSMAA, not FXAA.

If I recall the FXAA 1.0 FPS difference on older hardware years ago is 1-2fps at most.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

You mean for a lesser experience that a console provides.

How many people have a home theater?  Most people have a TV stand and a 32-42inch TV and maybe a soundbar, the key part of that is them already having it so it doesn't count towards the price comparison. Most people will have a TV and a laptop, if they have a desktop at all it will most likely have some crappy 15in or so monitor at 1280x720. Are you suggesting that playing on a 15 inch monitor is better than a 42 inch TV? because it isn't. The fact is that right now, regardless of how crap we think they are in comparison to PC's consoles are still better for "normal" people who want to play games. They can't tell the difference anyways so it doesn't matter that the game runs at 792/900/1080p on the consoles.

The argument "already having them so it doesn't count towards the price comparison" doesn't make sense. If you really want to count them, then I'll say people can plug their computer in the TV. That what's I do anyway... So we're talking adding a big 10$ for a mouse and keyboard combo. 30$ if you wanna be fancy and get the wireless version. So I don't think I'll have an argument for 10-30$...

shh, you're talking to much common sense, common sense doesn't seem to apply the second consoles are mentioned here *shift eyes* i must go before they see me! they will never destroy my consoles! *flies*

on a more serious note, this is kind of hilarious. 900p with aa or 1080p without? I'd honestly take the 900p but only cause my actual TV is still 720p and my work rig os 2x 1400x900.(personal rig is a crossfired 280x running 2x1080p eyefinity but thats not the point)

Rig 1 CPU: 3570K Motherboard: V Gene GPU: Power Color r9 280x at 1.35GHZ  RAM: 16 GB 1600mhz PSU: Cougar CMX 700W Storage: 1x Plexor M5S 256GB 1x 1TB HDD 1x 3TB GREEN HDD Case: Coolermaster HAFXB Cooling: Intel Watercooler

No version of windows if optimal for "living room" usage, you would need a keyboard with a trackpad (like the logitech K400) to avoid any mouse usage issues while navigating Windows and that wouldn't be optimal for gaming for obvious reasons. The only option then would be a gamepad of some description which would only end in disaster as any moderately competent mouse/keyboard users would annihilate you no matter how good you are with a controller.

The number of console killer builds for this generation of console disagrees with you sir, any modern pc can output to hdmi which covers sound and video direct to your tv, and there are far wider range of controllers available for the PC than any console. Also if you look under the hud, consoles are actually pc's now, static pc's that you can't upgrade and were already using technology that wasn't breaking edge at launch

Tell me, what kind of controller do you plan on using to put yourself on an equal footing with someone using a proper Keyboard and Mouse?

Actually, yes you can build a good PC for the same price as a console.

None of those Include an OS and there's still the control issue that I posted previously.

I wonder how they came up with an arbitrary number like 792p in the first place ? :) I guess 793p wasn't cutting it :P

Ah yes but non of those includes a monthly subscription fee to play online. And you'd be surprised what works on linux, which is free.

And as for controllers there will always be an overlap of those that perform worse with a key+mouse combo than a console controller and visa-versa. I don't think i've seen a definitive test between the two types of controllers. So while there may be anecdotal evidence that key+mouse is better, has anyone ever tested it with seasons professionals competing directly against each other first using their normal input methods, ie one with key+mouse the other the console controler, then reversing the input methods for the individuals as a second part to the test, along with some blind testing so each user doesn't know what the other is using.

Buying monthly is wasteful and stupid, anyone that has any sense will buy a year at a time and save a boatload of money.
