EKWB Announces Partnership with Asus to deliver Full 3080's, and AMD CPU+GPU Block design

TVwazhere

Summary

(This came out a week ago but) EKWB announces two single slot cards equipped with RTX cards provided by Asus. Unknown if these are custom PCB models or FE. It sounds to me that Asus will be in charge of retail distribution, potentially through regular sites like Amazon and Newegg.

Going the extra mile, the ASUS EKWB GeForce RTX 3090 and 3080 Series are built using Auto-Extreme technology to solder components to the PCB with extreme precision. All cards feature an aluminum backplate to prevent PCB flex and a single-slot mounting bracket made with 304 stainless steel for better corrosion resistance. Water block mounting is handled by ASUS during the manufacturing process, so each graphics card is ready right out-of-the-box to deliver high performance and reliability to customers.

In addition, in the Promotional Email I just got that had this article, they also showed off what appears to be RX 6000 and Ryzen 5000 series blocks for the newest AMD launch. The link leads to a 404 Page not found  It now works. Weird.

Yes, EK® is ready for the big release. We witnessed the launch of the latest Ryzen™ 5000 Series AMD® CPUs that make use of the Zen 3 architecture for incredible IPC gains, as well as bringing other improvements. This time around, we partnered up with AMD to design and develop a special Edition water block for Radeon™ RX 6000 series graphics cards and also a full range of special liquid cooling products to celebrate this big launch.

My thoughts

While EK blocks aren't chart toppers in terms of performance, they always have the widest variety of hardware compatibility (PCB specific GPU blocks most of the time) and it's both it's size and fabrication abilities that allow a partnership with a brand like Asus to happen. I would not be surprised if we see partnerships with MSI or Gigabyte (EVGA?)  with other various Custom Water block makers such as Heatkiller or (Optimus?) but only time will tell. The AMD GPU blocks are also great to see, as AMD being back in the GPU game makes buying an AMD GPU block an actually sane thing to say out loud (GPU blocks for an RX580? Pul-lease!)

I think this could make for a lot more simplicity for people just getting into custom loops. Don't have to worry what exact block you need if it comes pre installed(will FE block fit on my xxxxx). We'll see what the mark up on this is.

AMD block link isn't dead for me.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

Top pic is for reference models and bottom is FE. EKWB already has proper custom PCB blocks in the works.

Sauce: I used my eyes and looked at the pictures.

Is there a difference between FE and reference? I thought thy were one in the same. If so, wouldn't the card also have had the 12 pin connector?

Is there a difference between FE and reference?

Ya. Quick breakdown:

Reference:

  • Has a PCB a regular/normal/rectangle shaped PCB.
  • Has regular power connectors. In the case of the RTX 3090, it's twin 8 pin connectors.

FE:

  • Has a fancy looking PCB with a triangle cut out because the cooler design demands it (RTX 3080 and RTX 3090).
  • Has that super neat looking 12 pin power connector that's smol.

The RTX 3070 however is a bit different. It has a regular/rectangle PCB but has the 12 pin power connector. And I think because it has the 12 pin power connector, it's a FE card. Even though by looking at it, you could swear is has a reference PCB.

Play spot the difference below:

(some boards may have extra headers and slight component changes but that doesn't really matter too much for now).
