Is it still considered as an upgrade if I get an 6800xt

I'm currently using a rx 5700 (bios flashed 5700xt) I saved up about $2000 from my side jobs, and was thinking of getting a rx 6800xt.

Is it still considered an upgrade or am I just "tech addiction" like my sister says I am?

6800xt will be around a 3080, it's like a 50% diff.

Depends. You haven't told us what monitor you have, what you do with it, what games you play at what resolutions and quality settings....

It's not really a simple question to answer just comparing two cards. You don't have the top end of everything like reviewers do.

What monitor do you have? Unless you are at 1440p 144Hz+ an upgrade to the RX 6800 or better makes no sense.

I mean I know a lot of you guys are convinced about this being true... To me it's really just a tired meme. 

 

This really depends on the games you're playing, most "ego shooters" have very low requirements because they're visually just not very demanding, special effects, high res textures etc would actually be seen as hindering... And also they need to run on tomatoes because that's what the majority of gamers has (1050ti - 1060 level performance) 

 

But there are other games that are visually more demanding that I'm pretty sure can even bring a 3080 or 6800 to their knees, regardless of "resolution" (as long we're talking HD resolutions)

I don't really play games on this system, I use it mostly on my 3d modeling, rendering, 3d scope video editing and printing. I use dual 1440p 120hrtz qled curved ultra wide 29 inch.

Unless you're going to play on Cycles (Blender's ray-tracing rendering engine) there is no game that can drop the fps under 144 at 720p (I don't have a RTX 3080, so I can't talk by personal experiences but the benchmarks talk by themselves)

What resolution and what is your average FPS ?

How much FPS do you want ?

60fps in 4k ?

144fps in 1440p ?

 

For example I average 70-90fps in 1440p with my GTX 1080.

I would like +120fps so I have ordered RTX 3080 and currently waiting for delivery.

 

If you get the frames you are aiming for then I see no reason to upgrade.

As I said I do 3d work on the system I don't play games on it. 

I have another 1080p system just for gaming. 

I'm asking if I upgrade the gpu would the new card would help with the cad workload better.

I mean if that is your opinion on it that is okay.

 

But even visually demanding games will often easily exceed 130FPS+ on high/ultra settings with a 3080/6800XT at 1440p, so unless you have the monitor capable of that I would suggest to the OP that a lesser GPU would be a better purchase. That is why I asked. 

 

I rarely play shooter games and at 1440p 120Hz often am within that realm with my 1080Ti. I personally would not purchase a 3080/6800xt unless I had a monitor that was was capable of 1440p 144Hz+ otherwise there is no point IMO, you are leaving performance on the table.

 

So unless there is clear intent to get a monitor capable of the visual output of a powerful GPU, the money is best allocated elsewhere. Most buyers would be better suited to buy a 3070/6800 unless they have a high end monitor.

Like? Because even demanding titles at 4k are between 80-100FPS, and at 1440p its more like 130-160FPS, these are not shooter games either. 1080p is irrelevant with this hardware.

I mean there would definitely be real world application benefits of a 3080/6800xt. I personally have found that cuda-acceleration (Nvidia GPU's) in many programs is massively beneficial. So I would wait to see what AMD can offer with respects to that. 

 

If we just consider the resolution and gaming a 3070/6800 would be just fine, but if you do not game much on this system maybe that does not matter to you.

 

The question you should ask yourself is do you need the additional GPU horsepower for the work you do. If it is strictly as a hobby than the justification is not as clear. If you profit from this work then yeah that's a more justifiable purchase.

 

If you only have $2k saved up, maybe spending it all on PC goodness is not the most important use? Entirely your decision of course!

You have a point 1080ti would still be a good choice for a while for most use cases. However that particular model is discontinued and either available used at high prices (I would never buy a used gpu unless 2yr warranty then maybe) or for astronomically higher prices new. So it's not really an option for many, and a 3/6xxx series gpu is of course much more future proof. 

 

*PS: Europe here and things, especially discontinued things, are really excessively expensive here and the stuff you can get on eBay looks like 80% scam to me.

I reread the post. If you're using it for 3D modeling, the first question is are you happy with the RX 5700 (XT)? If you are, then there's no reason to upgrade.

If you want more performance, though, the RX 6800 XT will be roughly twice as fast if the initial benchmarks pan out.

I was just referencing my own system performance as I have a 1080Ti. At this point and time a 1080Ti would not be my recommendation, and not one that I made. Yes they are solid, but they are getting old, buying used has inherit risks, and with older hardware that risk increases.

i upgraded a 1080ti to a 3080 and running 1440p.. i consider it a great upgrade.. in syntethics we are talking 70+ % improvement..

 

and my 1080ti is what.. 50% faster than a 1070 if not more, and the 1070 equals your 5700xt.

so you will get a huge performance bump... and to be honest, i don´t like the game but tried legions with all on ultra. (think RTX was on high) and were between 60-80 FPS in 1440p so it is not like i have "extreme" amounts of headroom

 

the 5700xt is still fine for 1080p, but it depends.. do you want ultra on all games, or are you okay with High, and 1080p at max .
