How much of a PC's performance is decided by the motherboard?

How much  of  PC'S performance is affected by the motherboard? Like not the maximum for upgrades the performance.

In most cases essentially none, provided it supports your hardware.

Depends what you mean by performance. If overclocking, it can be noticeable. If bottom end, not much. Kind of an open ended question.

Actually even between Z series boards you can see 5 - 6 fps difference in performance. So, while not massive, it's not nothing.

a lot of high end ram performance and a good chunk of a cpu's oc potential is based on if you have a good motherboard or not.

 

but thats really about it

If you're talking about audio performance, then immensely since it's all handled by the onboard audio circuitry unless you have an add-in sound card or external DAC.

Acer: shit tier quality products, shit tier customer service thus far, they "tried" to solve my issue but they arent really doing anything but delaying and delaying. (on-going case since July)

Gigabyte: horrible customer service (gigabyte had literally 0 customer service, asked me to go to retailer with NO WAY to email them about a question) but at least they fixed my shit in ONE MONTH (would probably take me 1 hour to fix if they let me email them)

XiaoMi Phones: built like a tank but the software is buggy as all hell

Seagate HDD: had too many dead seagate drives

Kingston SSD: 300V controller swap thingy

Razer (except their mouse)

 

Remember, just because I had good/bad experiences with these companies/product, doesn't mean you will have similar experiences too. I would still recommend these products if they made sense for your needs, but I'll add a disclaimer of my experience if it's relevant. Feel free to DM me asking why they are where they are.

Board partners will fudge some extra CPU speed by nudging the base clock up a percent or two where possible.

 

But once you get into the realm of overclocking, it's pretty insignificant. 

 

As for budget boards, @noodlespinbot as long as the VRM isn't so weak that the CPU drops clocks, there's really no difference. In practice, what that means is don't use a 6 core 12 thread CPU on a motherboard with bare VRMs and you're good

The only time I did a comparison was with a i7 6700k.

The boards were an ASUS Z170 Pro vs ASUS Maximus Hero VII.

The Hero ran a lot cooler and the CPU performed a lot better. 

 

In games the Hero was so smooth the CPU ran more like a 6 core than a 4 core. 

 

The computer with the Pro board was dismantled for parts at the beginning of last year but Hero is still going strong.

 

After that experience I only buy Heros or Aurus boards even if the CPUs will not be overclocked because they are smoother and cause no stutter.
