How can I clean this gunk off of my motherboard?

Use 99% iso not 70%, and it's probably a mix of dust and flux that are now mixed together with the water in the iso. The best bet is ultrasonic cleaning but it's unlikely you have one so more iso like ShrimpBrime said with coffee filters and shop towels.

Was cleaning off my old dusty motherboard with 70% rubbing alcohol and paper towels and after drying it has this weird whitish residue on it. I assume it's the dust (or something the dust is made out of) that's now smeared out across the mobo. What's the best way to clean this off? Just keep trying to use rubbing alcohol and paper towels until it's all gone or is there a better way to do this? I've done several passes and it doesn't seem to be getting much better. The paper towels seem to turn yellowish after being rubbed on the mobo for a bit if that's relevant.

It shouldn't be too big of a deal but 70% is a tad low as it will have more water in it making it possible it'll corrode components or sit underneath a BGA chip and not evaporate. Then when you power it on it'll short things out

Yeah I bought a PSU off of r/hardwareswap and the guy didn't inform me (and I naively didn't ask although it is a mistake I will never make again) that it came from a smokers home. While there wasn't any residue, that thing smelled and has been smelling for a month now. I read that kitty litter can help so I have it safely resting in a bagful.

Thanks for reading all this by the way!

By the way, my desktop is a docked laptop. Get over it, No seriously, I have an exterrnal monitor, keyboard, mouse, headset, ethernet and cooling fans all connected. Using it feels no different to a desktop, it works for several hours if the power goes out, and disconnecting just a few cables gives me something I can take on the go. There's enough power for all games I play and it even copes with basic (and some not-so-basic) video editing. Give it a go - you might just love it.

White vinegar is said to remove odors, and evaporate cleanly. You could maybe spray it throughout with that and letting it completely dry before turning it on.

Umm, you know, Isopropyl will work well, yes. But you also need an antistatic brush, because how the hell do you clean this off with a paper towel, or similar (you don't really)

 

I'd at least get an antistatic brush therefore or even better:

as you see, comes with a brush. and is specifically made for PCBs ("Leiterplatten") like motherboards and such.

No, this is a bad idea. It works on the assumption it evaporates cleanly, which it doesn't. Vinegar contains sugar and other stuff, like *acid* ... so I wouldn't recommend that at all, especially not a PSU. o.o

You don't need to blow cigarette smoke it into your computer. People who smoke in their houses regularly will have that cigarette smoke build up on the walls and ceilings over time. And that smoke will get sucked into the intakes of your computer, resulting in this lovely mess.

I can't even buy 99% alcohol these days... it's nowhere to be found on the shelves. Even the 70% is all gone.

All we got now is those shady ass pseudo 70% gel for hands... which have been shown to be a scam in many cases, created by dumbasses in their garage and received rapid approval without proper testing from Health Canada. Some of these were found to have less than 10% of alcohol in them... completely useless.

 

 

But yeah, like the others have said, if you can find it... 99% alcohol.

 

Though I'm really not sure why in the world would you do that to the back of your motherboard. It's not like that part gets dirty. A simple spray of air should've been plenty. The only time I would even consider doing something like this, is if it was a used part from a smoker's home... And even there...
