How large are 8K displays?

whm1974

Well I just found that there are such things as 8K Videos. However who even owns such displays? What size screens are they? This has to be measure in feet instead of inches to be usable... I mean 4K displays below 40"/43" are not very practicable are they?

Would there be also a large pool of Video Memory just to show that resolution?

There are smartphones with 4K screens, so technically they could make very small 8K screens as well. How sensible that would be is another question. The smallest I could find for sale is 55"

The memory pool is simply number of pixels times bit depth. I think something around 120 MB or so.

7680×4320×32 bit = 1.061.683.200 bit ~ 126 MB

More pixels =/= Bigger size screen.

You could have 40" and 1080p, 1440p, 4K, or 8K.

If you are just showing an 8K image, or 8K video playback, you'll probably only use up ~2GB (or less?) of Video Memory (VRAM) or something.

Eventually we'll have 8k phone screens. Beyond totally useless and just there for specs reasons. 55 inch is the smallest.

As someone with a 27" 4K display I rarely run into issues with stuff being too small.
So you can blanket state "x resolution on y size won't work", as it depends on a lot of different factor.

DPI is just one factor, but also how far you will sit from the display, what you will do on it, etc.

Over the years, it seems like the general recommended DPI has hovered around the 100, meaning you need these sizes for a couple different resolutions:

Or for my imperial buds:

Spoiler

But again, it all depends on a lot of scenarios. As said before, my 27" 4K works fine, which has a similar DPI to a 53" 8K.

You just won't use the 53" display at the same distance as 27" :P

Would love a 50" 8K. Would be like my 50" 4K, but "retina".

I have a 2560x1600p 30" display and this is fine for my needs. I was looking at a 43" 4K TV sold at Walmart a few years ago that has a few features that makes this suitable for use as a computer screen. I think it was ~$300, maybe a bit less.

Given what I spent on my current setup and and the fact I would need to update my dGPU to play games... I merely snorted at the thought...

There's Dell 8K monitor that is 32" size. 27"-30-ish for 4K is what I like. No limitation to size.

That sounds a bit small for a 8K display...

Nah, depends how you look at it. It's all about higher pixel density, definitely benefit to it.

Any dGPUs that can play games with reasonable performance at 8K?

I mean Linus did a video, but really I wouldn't be looking into that as of now.
