Does humidity matter for PCs

Does humidity affect computers or laptops.

If so what is the optimal level for it.

 

This maybe a dumb question.

I'm just curious and a bit concerned!!

Most electronics are (negatively) affected by humidity. Most are designed to operate within a certain range. It should normally state somewhere on the individual product how much humidity is fine. It also depends on whether humidity is just in the air or condensing (which would be pretty bad).

 

Afaik, if things are too dry, there's a higher risk of static electricity which can damage components, while too much moisture can conduct electricity which can lead to malfuntions.

i wouldnt game in a closed bathroom with a hot shower running, but 100% humidity on a sunny day wont doom the system

45%-50% is the recommended humidity anywhere as I've read.

That's for humans anyway, but a PC there will be fine

There is a reason data centers are cool and dry and have environmental controls. Now several racks of servers chugging along all day versus a person computer or laptop are very different in tolerances but they are analogous to some degree. Computers in general don't like warm, moist environments. They may continue to work for a while but the longer you leave them there the more effect it can have.

Tech stuff likes things dry. Any server room I've ever been has been cool and dry.

Humidity also equals mould. Cool and dry is your best environment.

 

I sell Industrial PC's and we use components rated for 0% to 95% humidity, and actively advertise this as an advantage over less tropicalised competitive products that might fail in harsh environments.

 

For your day to day PC .. probably not a a major issue in the lifetime that you will own it.

Humid climate is nothing to PCs and laptops but if the moisture in the air starts condensing and falling as drops on your PCs, it can be really dangerous. So it is better to keep your PCs in a moisture free area and prevent them from water, if they are not waterproof.

Most server rooms I work in have humidifiers come on somewhere between 30% and 40% RH. It all depends on what the customer wants. Dehumidification is rarely a problem, as they are cooling the space.

 

That said, some Amazon data centers use direct water evaporation for their server farms. The equipment gets nasty. But they've found the energy savings of using water vs traditional refrigeration outweighs the lower lifespans of the equipment. They obviously aren't telling the HVAC contractor much about the computer component side, so I'm not sure how the lifespan of the computers are affected, but again, it's saving them money.

 

Due to the way moisture works, you will never condense moisture onto your PC components. Baring extreme temperature/humidity swings that would likely never happen.

I think it depends on what country you live in.

If you live in a somewhat normal environment in the USA.

High humidity periodically during the summer probably won't hurt anything.

I have pretty normal weather for the most part but sometimes it rains constantly here in the summer. 😬

To the point where I feel like I might have to build a boat to live on and it has never hurt any of my computers.

 

On the flip side I have heard people from Australia complaining about getting corrosion on the parts inside their computers.

 

What is your environment like and what country do you live in?

100% would mean it is raining which would kill the PC very quickly lol
