My GPU Fans Are Stopping Working While Gaming

Curesto

                                                                                        **Update**

I wasn't able to disassemble the GPU as i don't have appropriate screwdriver to remove back screws, so i had to clean off the most of the dust i can, but i wasn't able to clean the dusts are on GPU die area. Also, which type of screwdriver should i use? I've tried 10 different screwdrivers but, wasn't able the remove back screws.

Currently, all the fans are working perfectly.

Also, i'm not sure if GPU needs new thermal pad change.

I've downclocked GPU to 1000 MHz from 1100 MHz and downgraded Power limit to -35.

The temps are lower than old temps,  but it still seems bit high to me compared to YouTube videos about on same card.

Here's the OSD results on CS:GO after 15 minutes of gameplay (Maximum settings 1280X1024 V-Sync On. Gameplay on workshop map called "Lite" it's more demanding than other maps in my experience)

Here's the picture of GPU, it still dusty, because i wasn't able to access inside of the GPU to clean the dust off:

A can of canned air would do wonders.
You don't have to disassemble your GPU to blow out the dust - it's what I do to clean out the blower cooler on my GPUs.

I've been trying to blow the dust off with hair dryer.

Hair dryers spread the airflow over a wide area. Canned air directs it into a small spot for max pushing power.
It's why hair dryers have the giant opening - to hit a lot of hair with middling power than a small amount of hair with a bunch of power.

After the clean up, suprisingly all the fans are working perfectly.

Are these temps are normal at around %50-60 load?

I think GPU needs new thermal paste. All fans are working but still sees 70 degrees even at %30 usage. In FurMark, GPU instantly hit 98 degrees.

Hi, i want to replace my GPU's fans as they're failing or dead.

Fan size of my GPU is: 85mm-75mm-85mm.

I'll get fans from local markets.

I'll replace 85mm ones with FirstD Dual-X 85mm fans.

https://www.gittigidiyor.com/bilgisayar-tablet/sapphire-r9-280x-3g-85mm-fan-fd7010h12s_pdp_468324116

Middle one isn't appropriate, i want to replace it with FirstD Dual-X 75mm fan.

Are these fans would fit on my card without problems? Thanks.

Hi, i had R9 280X with dead fans. Until getting new fans, i had to play games with downgraded clock speed and undervolt. But even after that, GPU runs dangerously hot and i don't really want to get GPU killed.

So, is it safe to play games around these temps? Or should i continue play games after i get new fans?

Uh no that's basically asking for damage to the GPU. I would definitely not play any games while you wait or play very light games at most. You want the GPU to stay below 80C at most really.

The more I learn, the more I realise I don't actually know anything.

Recommendations: Lian Li 205m (sleek, pretty decent airflow for a non-mesh front panel and cheap), i5-10400f (Ryzen 5 3600 performance, 20% cheaper), Arctic P14 PWM fans, Logitech g305.

Thanks for the answer. I think i should play some light games until i get new fans.

Dude just replace the fucking fans already. You've made probably half a dozen threads by now trying all possible things (cleaning the card, new thermal paste, etc) but none of those things will solve mismatching and nonfunctional fans. 90 won't kill it but it ain't good either.

Okay, i'll get these fans as soon as possible.

I'll get 2 85mm Dual-X fans and on 75mm one to the middle. Should be okay for Tri-X model R9 280X.

Is it really that hard to replace it with the intended fans that came with the card from the factory? If you can't find those, replace the entire cooler. Arctic makes really good ones. But you'll just be back here making more threads about your temps if you do another jank fix with bad fans.

I can't find the exact same fans. I'll ask the seller if these fans are suitable for my GPU. If not, i'll ziptie some case fans to it.

Is there's a way to save thermal pads or not damaging them while tearing down the GPU?

  • 4 weeks later...

So, my old fans were broken, i've changed them and applied new thermal compound. I've applied thermal paste (Xigmatek PTI-G3606) on it and changed fans with appropriate ones. The temps are better than old. But it still too high for some reason.

I've cleaned heatsink from all the dust.

I'm sure i've applied thermal paste properly. Also the heatsink is cleaned out and i've fitted it right to the card. It contacts to GPU die as it should.

Also the case nearly has no airflow, only has 1 8mm exhaust fan, inside of case gets hot because of that. Does it has something to do with the temps of the GPU? Also GPU is bit close to the bottom of the case. Case is 15 years old case, and it it's impossible to do some proper cable managment.

It hits 95 degrees at %100 usage. Hits 85-88 degrees at around %80-85 usage.

All the fans are work properly and some reason GPU still overheats. Fans spin faster as the temps rises.

GPU model: Sapphire R9 280X Tri-X OC 3GB GDDR5 384-BIT

What should i do?

This is how case looks like from outside also the location of the GPU:(Some parts are dusty but GPU is clean).

Your PC has literally no airflow.  The heat from the GPU saturates the case.

Get a couple fans, one for front intake, another for rear exhaust. No, that little black one in back doesn't count.

Is it dual bios? Are you on Boost BIOS?

It has dual BIOS, but i don't think it's boost BIOS. More like UEFI and legacy BIOS.

Really? Try switch it up. I had a Sapphire HD7950 TriXx long time ago and one of the BIOS is locked at 1.25v.
