What are you using it for? I'd imagine a 2060 Super would be enough for pretty much anything that your college work would need and it can game @ 1080p just fine.

im doing a course which is about 3D modellling game engine use, things such as maya blender z brush unreal engine stuff like that. VFX, rigging, animation and ect.

Ah, I see. Still, I'd imagine that your initial 3D work will be fairly basic and the 2060 Super will be usable. After awhile, you'd have a better idea if it is worth spending so much (in terms of time saved and better usability), or not and the 4080 Super will either be a bit cheaper, or there will be a better option?

thats true, however I have already had this card for ages now and i am feeling like a better card would help me with render times and just make it effecient. Money isnt really a big thing for me as i have saved up alot during my gap year so i was just really wondering if i should get the 4080s or if there is any reason to wait? ( I was planning on getting a better gpu anyway because i game at 1440p/4K)

if vram is what you need, you could go for the 4070 ti super, a beast at 1440p, 4080s will run 4k for sure, but dont expect max settings, is used a possibility,  you could pick up a used 3090 ti for ~800

Ngl getting a 4080 super for 950 new from NVidias website seems like the best deal for me now. but i didnt know if theres been rumors of anything game changing coming from the new series cards.

The main reason I suggest caution, is that I see it ALL the time where someone starts a tech course, spends $3K and then realises their college work could have run fine on a potato. I'd be very surprised if the 2060 Super costs you much in render time, so if you use it to hold out, you'll be able to find out what is worth buying (or not).

Since there's a big focus on compute performance now (especially AI), I wouldn't be surprised if the new GPUs improve that side of things more than their gaming performance, even in the mainstream RTX range.

that is true, maybe I will hold onto my 2060 super for a bit longer. however i am completely rebuilding a new pc with the ryzen 7 7800x3d so that should help for the mean time

You should be more than fine to wait if you want to. I did most of my 3d modeling for engineering on a 1060 6gb laptop gpu. I wouldn't expect to have anything too crazy your first semester in classes.

If not getting their 4090 class cards, I would wait till end of year because you dont need the upgrade urgently and thats the earliest the 5000 series will be released.

As that time approaches, people are more likely to hold back on upgrades. In conjunction with holiday sales, the 4000 series could get some nice discounts even if the new launch does not happen.

Reason for excluding the 4090 from that strategy is because Nvidia appears to be constricting supply to keep its price high.

If you want the best of the best, might as well get one at MSRP now
