WHAT BURNT ON MY BOARD

I bought this board about a month ago and everything looked fine on it and now I’m taking a closer look at it and there’s something burnt on the bottom of it. I looked back on the original listing pic and it’s there. I’ve been using it just fine and got a stable OC of 4ghz on an i7 960 so it must be non essential. The board is an msi x58a-gd45. I think it may be the connection for the FireWire port and the previous owner plugged in a usb connector on it or something. Any help is appreciated

Who's the OEM and what's the model? Firewire did have a tendency to go bang if it was mixed up for a USB header.

Aerocool DS are the best fans you've never tried.

Nah, I took a look in the manual and it isn't called out. If it was a fan header it would show here.

Gotcha.  Hmm... Pretty crappy manual design if it doesn't even show that connector.

I don't think it's a connector, looks like an SMD to me, possibly a fuse (though idk why would there be a fuse at that spot)

 

Maybe someone plugged in HD audio into ac97 header? Or vice versa

It’s not a connector as far as I can tell, I think it may be a controller for some kind of port around it

J1394 is a FireWire connection, so it's probably

Yeah seeing how the chip is right next to the J1394 it's prob the controller for that if I had to make a guess.

It has too many pads to be a capacitor (unlike the one above) but a bit too few to be a mosfet (unless 4 pad mosfets are actually a thing) abd let alone anything more complex, hmm

 

I doubt it will outright disable the whole system tho, more likely just losing certain ports.

Ok so it’s probably just the controller for the FireWire port, plugged in a FireWire header and no luck with it. I guess it’s a good thing FireWire is dead

Just asked the seller and he said that when he first got the board he made that mistake lol. Let’s hope he didn’t make any other mistakes using this board

It's not a connector, it's some sort of diode.

Motherboard tier list. Tier A for overclocking 5950x. Tier B for overclocking 5900x, Tier C for overclocking 5800X. Tier D for overclocking 5600X. Tier F for 4/6 core Cpus at stock. Tier E avoid.

Can confirm that this is the Firewire controller.
Had the same Motherboard for a while, firewire worked until at one point, i wanted to plug a USB controller into it and that thing burned down quite fast. Firewire didnt work afterwards anymore. 

So, as long as you dont need firewire, you are good to go :D

It's a fuse, something made it go "Pop".
If you know how to solder you can simply replace it. I would NOT suggest bypassing it, it popped for a reason and if it pops the replacement then you know the board itself has a real problem.
