Good idea to buy used 1070 now?
Distorted_doggo replied to Distorted_doggo's topic in Graphics Cards
Well the main reason I want a 1070 is because the 1650 super cannot keep up with a 144hz monitor and in the future I will get one. A 1070ti is around 240 though, so I may get one of those. -
Ok so my birthday is coming up and I wanted to get myself something nice and you can get a gtx 1070 for around $200 usd here in the US. Is it a bad idea to buy now? The rtx 3070 and 3060 will be coming out soon and big Navi as well, but their lower end cards won’t be coming for a while. I don’t think prices will change much in the coming months but my 1650 super may drop in value quicker (currently going for $130 on eBay) What do you guys think?

Just asked the seller and he said that when he first got the board he made that mistake lol. Let’s hope he didn’t make any other mistakes using this board -
WHAT BURNT ON MY BOARD
Distorted_doggo replied to Distorted_doggo's topic in CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory
Ok so it’s probably just the controller for the FireWire port, plugged in a FireWire header and no luck with it. I guess it’s a good thing FireWire is dead -
WHAT BURNT ON MY BOARD
Distorted_doggo replied to Distorted_doggo's topic in CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory
It’s not a connector as far as I can tell, I think it may be a controller for some kind of port around it -
I bought this board about a month ago and everything looked fine on it and now I’m taking a closer look at it and there’s something burnt on the bottom of it. I looked back on the original listing pic and it’s there. I’ve been using it just fine and got a stable OC of 4ghz on an i7 960 so it must be non essential. The board is an msi x58a-gd45. I think it may be the connection for the FireWire port and the previous owner plugged in a usb connector on it or something. Any help is appreciated

i7 960 4ghz OC at 1.28V
Distorted_doggo replied to Distorted_doggo's topic in CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory
This is a high quality board though, the capacitors on it are rated for 14yrs if used stock (according to the box). But if it does fail, whoever buys one of my PCs gets my business card with my email on it. If there are any problems down the line with the board down the line I’ll be responsible. -

Yeah I’m sure I’m looking at the right numbers. I guess I’ll heed your advice, it’s a shame too it looks like I won the silicon lottery with this one. I suppose it’s better than getting an angry email 1 year down the line saying the pc fried itself -
Alright so I got a deal from a friend on an i7 960 16GB of G.SKILL RipjawsX and an msi x58a-gd45 motherboard for $50. He got it new in 2011 and never overclocked on either the chip or the board. I’m planning to use this in a cheap gaming rig to sell locally but I wanted to see how it overclocks first. I got it up to 4.02 ghz without touching any voltages with the cpu multiplier at 175x23. I’ve been running cinebench r20, prime 95, Aida 64 and playing games on it all day and haven’t had any problems yet. The max temp I got on a hyper 212 evo is 85C with room temps around 30C. The voltage stays

Suddenly no POST, EZ Debug LED CPU on
Distorted_doggo replied to X01X012013's topic in Troubleshooting
try reseating the ram/ PSU cables/ GPU, maybe they came loose after a while. If that doesnt work you can try another power supply but as you said you dont have any spare parts to test with. Maybe ask a friend you know if they have one you can try -
yeah I got an EVGA 500W and my r5 1600AF isnt overclocked, I think Ill be fine with that for a few months

If you wait for the new gpu generation to come out used prices on cards like the gtx 1660 or even gtx 1070 are going to drop a fair bit. A nice 1650 super goes for around $170 and even right now a 1070 goes for around $200 on ebay. I would wait maybe a few months to see if those prices go down. If not and you cant spend the extra $40 the 1650 super isnt bad at all
