ATH-M50 vs ATH-M50x

Do you think it is worth the extra $30-$50 for the M50x's?

Same sound, but more features.

Nevertheless, get Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro 250OHM. They cost less than M50X and sound better. Take it from an ATH M50 owner like myself.

Sadly, nope. They're open. The M50s are good, don't get me wrong. But, the leather earpads are suffocating and there are better performers for the money.

Can you recommend any others that are same price range that are closed back?

Are they as good as the M50's? If there is that much of a difference, I will go open back.

I think there's already been multiple threads on this issue.

Anyone want to start a betting pool on how many more we'll see?

So, instead of trying to be constructive and help the OP, you want to complain because "there have already been multiple threads on this issue"?

Okay.

Okay.

This has to be the 5th or 6th thread with exactly the same question and we've all given exactly the same answer.

M50's are poor value and there are much better option for the money. Especially the m50x.

Okay, let's see. I scrolled through the first page of topics in Audio, and I found only two threads pertaining to ATH M50 (X)

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/121258-opinion-on-the-ath-m50x/

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/121649-beyerdynamic-dt-990-pro-vs-audio-technica-m50/

of which, NEITHER are about what the OP is asking for. He simply asked if the M50X are worth it over the M50s.

I scrolled through the next FOUR pages, and there was one, but ONE, thread about the same topic.

See, now I feel like an arse for not reading the whole thread...

Open headphones like the DT990 are better if your environmental noise is quiet, and a really nice experience to own. If you really think you need a closed headphone, the DT770 is better for the price than the M50's. The NVX XPT100 is a great cheaper option if you wanna save some cash.

I'm not really worried about $$, just want it to be around $150-$175. I live right next to the freeway with 6 pets (yes you heard that right) so I think I will need closed back. I have tried open back in my house and they didn't work. Do the DT770 offer better sound quality?

DT770 80ohm is a great headphone.

The M50 is overpriced in a lot of people's opinions (not just on this forum) because it's "popular" right now.

Try them out if you can, some A/B testing will be waaayyyy more helpful than anyone on the internet can be.

I have a pair of DT-770 Pro 250 ohm, a pair of ATH-M50 and ATH-M50s. My pairs of M50/M50s are sitting in their carrying pouch gathering dust waiting for me to do something with them (preferably resell on ebay or something...).

I can tell you from my own personal experience I wish I saved $200+ and skipped the ATH-M50/s. They gave me insane headaches. My ears sweat immediately. The earpads deformed quickly. They F'n suck as bad as Fox News does at reporting imo. The ATH-M50 I used on the go with an iPhone 4S and a fiio E11 for a long while; I'll admit they were alright for that (maybe not the best at the price point).

The ATH-M50/s blocked more sound from leaking out, but I have no issue with ambient sounds leaking into my pair of DT-770 Pros. The earpads and headband are much more comfortable and of better materials (velour vs faux leather). There is also much more room for your ears (preventing the headaches I was getting). The sound is definitely better to me as well on my DT-770.
