Its an AMD Duron 1.3GHz from 1999

I never knew my grandparents were AMDbuddys aswell! :D

I dunno if its still working tho.. I dont have a 462 Socket motherboard lying around

Love the look of old CPUs. My dad's got an old socket 7 Pentium MMX showcased on the wall at work, always used to pick it up and check it out haha. It's just really cool to see old tech and how everything's evolved over the years.

That is the CPU socket.  

3 DIMM slots, an AGP slot, 5 PCI slots and 2 ISA slots.   Old school as hell.

The slot next to the IO is indeed the CPU socket.  Intel used that style for a short time.  CPUs came on a daughterboard.

With the increase of pcie bandwidth do you think that at some point cpu on separate board will ever come back ?  Maybe along with swapable bios chipset.  That would be kinda cool if you could buy one motherboard and just swap the cpu board and bios chipset when it's time to upgrade.  The upgrade path would be tied to the pcie version instead of being tied to the socket.  Well that would probably not work cause of latency issue.

not really in MFG's best interest to make them more modular

 

the more things they can integrate the more they can sell

Not with current tech.    As fast as PCIE is, it would still be a bottleneck given the total IO needed.

memory controller and stuff was on the northbridge, interface was on the southbridge. Motherboards used to have 2 chips to control the system, which is why "chipset" is the term.

 

We don't really have "sets" anymore since all we have is the southbridge anymore, but it's just leftover terminology. so they still call it chipset.

 

memory controller is located on the cpu now, and graphics has a direct connection to the cpu.
