LTT Folding Team's Emergency Response to Covid-19

Go to solution Solved by GOTSpectrum,

This event has ended and I recommend you guys head over to the Folding Community Board for any general folding conversation.

if this is any consolation:

I knew nothing of folding until the video linus put up to be honest...always wondered what those badges were

My home PC is my gaming PC.  I prefer to be gaming as much as I can, and that is what it will go back to after the event is over.  However, I will be leaving my work PC on 24/7 365 to fold.  And I just upgraded its GPU, very significantly.  So a little something gained!

So why don’t fold with your gaming pc whilst at work + work pc 24/7? 😀

I think you're looking at the reduction of the number of new active users over a certain period (a week?).

Active users only reduced by less than 4K from peak.

Quick question, just trying to learn how to use  HFM.NET, what the "runningnoframetimes" means?

imagen.thumb.png.10a8b3e9640c1a08666365182fc7ee5c.png

AFAIK, it means that slot hasn't completed enough of the WU's frames to give a good estimate of time/point/etc.  After a few completed frames it should go normal green.

R5 3600, 5700 XT, AX370 K7...  and that's plenty for me.  If you ignore the masses of other parts I occasionally put together and laugh about.

Still quite impressive to me.  That's only 10% behind my Vega Frontier Edition with the blower screaming, the core voltage trimmed, and the power budget cranked.  What sort of wattage are your 5700 XTs reporting?

My 5700XT has reported 1.1-1.4mil PPD, but I haven't actually done the math to get a hard number on it.  It draws about 189W most of the time.

Im sold on it, im just going to keep letting FAH run from startup;  will turn it off at home when playing big old games at high rez.  But otherwise, I am planning on leaving it on.  Why the hell not right?

Power bill mostly, lol.

For long-term use, something like a 1600AF and a Quadro K4000 or similar card might be ideal.  It would be a pretty low power draw so it could just run forever.  (No I did no actual math on those recommendations lol)

Question: can you run an nVidia card and an AMD card in the same box?  Worried that if I throw my Radeon 7850 in to my rig, I'll end up nuking either the system (bluescreen or the sort) or that it will simply be a fruitless effort (as in, either the system or F@H won't pick it up).

Just want to see if I can squeeze out another few points per hour.

Here's what's in my rig now:

- AMD FX-8150 CPU (8 core)

- 16 GB G.SKILL Ripjaws

- ASUS Sabertooth 990FX v2.0

- nVidia GTX 1080

- Windows 10

Want to throw in an ASUS Radeon HD 7850 2 GB GDDR5.

I have the slot and the power, so that's not a problem.

Thoughts?  Suggestions?

How do you find the 20.x AMD drivers on Windows for compute?

They made some change after 19.11.3 where not all 4 compute groups are reported by the driver. Compute 2 is missing from task manager or HWiNFO. Not the cause, but any later driver with that bug has been unstable so far, at least for Vega cards. Sounds like Navi fairs better?

Just installed yesterday so I cant speak to the long term.

Only showing Comopute1 in HWinfo. about 95-98% on both.

Moving to Linux in a bit.

Gee. I have an open PCIe slot in my Win10 daily driver and in my KVM system but that one is in a Fractal Core 1100 and even with a Noctua iPPC2000 running full-bore tends to get a little hot with a GPU in it.

Must resist urge ...

My next purchase will probably be a 3900x or 3950x to replace the 2700 in my x570 Pro WiFi

Doesn't it depend a lot on the OS though?  I know on the Windows side of things, Windows 7 had issues with multiple drivers like that, though I think 10 fixed it?

It would be fun to toss the K4000 into a machine just to see what it can do.

You can fold with Both nVidia and AMD GPU cards in same systems. Just make sure the last driver of the card you install is in the firsts top PCI-E 16X slot.
