A new notch in display technology - New Vivo phone announcements

williamcll

Out of the 4 brands of Oppo, Vivo normally carries the most unique features out of Realme and OnePlus, this time it is finally pushing forward the under display camera concept it demonstrated sometime ago on the Vivo NEX 2020 5G. Comes with Snapdragon 865, 12GB RAM, 256GB Storage and 6.45 inch FHD+ edge screen. Price and release date are not confirmed.

Last year, we saw a portless and buttonless phone in the Apex line. Now, we have a new concept phone from the brand: the Vivo Apex 2020. Interestingly, this phone takes the two biggest innovations of each of the previous Apex phones and melds them together. The Vivo Apex 2020 features an in-display selfie camera, which means there’s no need for a notch, a display cutout, or even a pop-up camera. The lens itself lives under the glass making it so you never need to see it. The Vivo Apex 2020 also has no ports and no buttons. If you want to charge it or transfer data to/from the phone, you’ll need to exclusively use wireless solutions. Thankfully, the Vivo Apex 2020 is capable of wireless charging speeds of 60W, which means it takes about one minute to charge each 100mAh of battery. Unfortunately, Vivo did not divulge how big the battery capacity is on this new Apex. The Vivo Apex 2020 also has a gimbal-stabilizing main camera system on the rear. This means the whole module, not just the lens, gets stabilized by a mechanical gimbal. According to Vivo, this is 200% more effective than traditional OIS we see on most flagship smartphones and will make recording super-smooth video incredibly easy. Finally, the camera also has a 5x – 7.5x optical zoom. This would mean you could, theoretically, achieve 7.5x zoom without any loss of image quality. That stabilizing gimbal will help keep your shot from getting blurry with that much zoom.

Other than that, Vivo have also announced a mid-range Z6, comes with snapdragon 765G, 6/8GB RAM and 128GB Storage, 5000mAh battery and 44W charging.

The vivo Z6 5G is built around a 6.57" 20:9 display of 2400x1080 pixel resolution. It's surrounded by slim bezels on three sides and promises a screen-to-body ratio of 90.74%. The screen has a 3.85mm punch hole in the upper right corner which houses the 16MP selfie camera. Around the back, you get a fingerprint scanner accompanying an L-shaped quad camera setup which is a combination of a 48MP main, 8MP ultrawide (112-degree FOV), 2MP macro and 2MP depth sensor modules. On the software front, the Z6 5G runs Android 10-based Funtouch OS 10 and has features like Multi-Turbo 3.0, Game Space 3.0 and Game Box in tow. The Snapdragon 765G-powered smartphone promises "PC-grade" liquid cooling (williamcll's note: single heat pipe) which uses an 85mm liquid-cooled heat-dissipating pipe with a core temperature of 10-degree Celsius. Moreover, the system has a multi-layer graphite heat sink with a total area of over 10,000mm².

The V19 is also coming soon in march, carries a Snapdragon 730G instead.

Additionally, the company shared an image of the vivo V19, which confirms the smartphone will have two color options and sport an L-shaped quad camera setup on the back with a 48MP main unit.

For selfies and video calls, there will be a 32MP snapper on the front housed inside the punch-hole in the top-right corner of the display. vivo also posted a short video teaser, which reveals the V19 will have a USB-C port at the bottom, flanked by a 3.5mm headphone jack and a speaker.

Thoughts: While there's nothing really stand out about the Z6 and V19, the new NEX is fascinating, except for the lack of any USB ports means there's going to be a lot of headache for things like rooting.

The Vivo Apex 2020 is a cool concept though, not even looking at phones with holes or notches in display.
