Acorns have a cap.  Nut sticks out the bottom.  I don’t know if the cap is a fruit or not.  Pretty large soft nutritious oily fruit or a nut rather.  Fruit is a technical term which doesn’t necessarily mean edible.  The nut is what keeps squirrels going in the winter.  People generally don’t eat them though because they’ve also got a chemical in them that makes them taste terrible.  It can be soaked out though.  Native Americans used to make acorn flour by mashing the acorns and soaking them in a water bath, tossing the bitter water, drying the acorns out again and grinding them into flour.

i never ear acorns or the hickory nut because i tried one off the ground and it tasted nasty like i deshelled it with a rock

Acorns and hickory nuts taste nothing alike I understand.  They don’t even look similar

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

oh i got confused, i like pecans but there was a nut i find on the ground a lot that fall from trees that look like acorns.

Chances are they’re acorns depending on where you are located.  Lots of oak trees around in North America and Europe.

Acorns taste terrible unless properly prepared, they're high in tannin and very bitter. Maple seeds taste alright when they're young and green though and dandylion stems are pretty good in salads when young and tender.

there are a bunch of different subspecies. One is just a narrow band across the southern US seaboard. One or two are so rare it’s only a couple specks on the map.  This one has a pretty big range though.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

well i'm in oregon but i guess next time i see them i'll just check what they are. i find so many on the ground, when i was young i would use to stomp on them and deshell them (not eat them) with my shoes because it was cool i guess

I’ve most commonly heard the term “pit” used for olives.  Like peach pit.  Olive pits are crushed to make olive oil.  Oil made from pitted olives doesn’t have a lot of olive flavor.  Comes out more like corn oil.
