There have been OLED screen phones far before the iPhone and there hasn’t been any reported widespread issues. Don’t get sucked in to the Samsung QLED scaremongering marketing.

So there is oled data.  The guinnea pigs have been able to report.  Does it last well?

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Oh, so Apple's 7 years late to the party.

 

The notch looks horrible and FaceID could be easily replaced with TouchID. 

 

Compared to Samsung's design Apple's notch is just... bad. Even if it's hidden, it still stands out when you do watch video, etc.

I don’t even know what QLED is.  I suppose I’ll have to find out.

They tend to not adopt technology till they know it works.  Or they used to.  That butterfly keyboard was pretty bad.  They did it in 2017 then dropped it for 2-3 years though.  I find this interesting.

Sure.

 

Thats a completely different argument. I kind of like the look, it’s symmetrical. Face ID I am less enthusiastic about, I preferred Touch ID.

 

Samsungs design is even uglier imo, I prefer the symmetry of the iPhone design. The Samsung design also has the exact same drawbacks in video watching, you usually wouldn’t extend the video out to the edges anyway as most content is 16:9 you’ll be clipping the top and bottom of the video.

I've swapped fingerprint reader for FaceID and it's great. And notch, as much as I've hated it and everyone else, it's not even annoying. So battery and signal is up there in notch corners, The rest is below. I'm fine with that.

Despite all the whining how iPhone XR only has 720p LCD, the image on it is absolutely amazing. And yes, I had SuperAMOLED's before.

Indeed. It's the ole ppi matters more on a phone thing. They still hit over 300ppi same as every other iPhone since the iPhone 4S. The iPhone Plus models were 401ppi (full 1080p), the X is 458ppi and I believe the new ones are similar. All retina displays, which is just marketing speak for "you can't tell the pixels apart anyways". Unlike on a computer, iPhones and iPads typically have two scaling settings to choose from, it's not like you get more or less usable space with a change in res. Since you can't tell the pixels apart anyways, there isn't actually a reason for a higher res screen, other than sometimes looking very slightly crispier. IIRC iPads are 264ppi or something, Macs with Retina displays are 200+ as well.

 

Also helps that Apple has consistently had very, very good panels in their devices. 

Oh and back on the OLED thing, Apple Watches are all OLED AFAIK, they came out in 2015.

The fact they are basically only phone maker that updates devices for 5+ years tells they do give a shit. Opposed to Androids where you're lucky if you get 2 and it has to be in Google One program, meaning it's filled with Google's shit and even then it's up to individual vendor to release the update. And if you don't, then it's the lucky if you get 2...

What, do you really think Samsung was releasing OLED-equipped Galaxy phones at razor-thin margins?  Hell no,  that's how it has justified its prices for years.

 

For years, OLED represented a collection of tradeoffs.  The deep contrast and potential battery life improvements were there, but the colour accuracy, brightness and sharpness... no, just no.  Early Galaxies (and other phones like the Lumia 1020 I recently resurrected) were known for gaudy colours, obvious PenTile effects and dim screens.  When I tried the Galaxy S III, I had to shield the screen just to use it outdoors on a reasonably bright day.

 

Apple does like to protect its profit margins, but there are numerous actual reasons why it only switched to OLED in 2017.  Colour accuracy and brightness were part of it, but there were also boring realities like manufacturing capacity.  Remember, iPhone sales are usually dominated by the newest models in the lineup -- that means Apple needs tens of millions of OLED panels per quarter.  It couldn't realistically use OLED until partners like Samsung and LG could reliably make enough panels (on top of whatever they need for themselves) to satisfy those needs.

 

And like RejZoR said, there's a tremendous irony to claiming that Apple doesn't care about longevity when it's the only phone vendor delivering OS support for five years, and lately has made a point of boosting performance for phones at the tail end of the cycle?  I know Google Play Services helps keep Android phones more up to date than their OS version suggests, but it remains true that the Android world is notorious for dropping users like hot potatoes after two years.

Pretty much the only OLED screens I've seen burn in are on demo products (same images looping over and over), or in burn-in tests, both of which are far from normal use. And the burn in tests have stated that in normal use, people won't see any burn in.

Yeah this is why I'm using an iPhone currently. I'm pretty happy don't seem myself going back to Android anytime soon, personally.

It would surprise me if they flat out removed FaceID but it is Apple we're talking about, they can be unpredictable at times, despite all the leaks and tired designs.
