(Upgrade from RX 580) RTX 2060 or 2060 Super?

rooVV

I'm set on one of these 2 GPUs, primarily because my demand for Turing NVENC exceeds that of gaming performance (1080p gaming is fine for me).

2060 fits the bill, but for $50-100 more the 2060 Super has a little more juice and 2 GB more VRAM (could come handy in the near future). It is more comparable to an RTX 2070.

Just need recommendations as to which one would be better as an everyday gamer (primarily older games 2008-2015) and livestreamer (demands 720p60 6K or higher).

Current GPU is a used Gigabyte Aorus RX 580 8GB that likes to bluescreen and die when i use it to encode my streams or use it with multiple monitors with different refresh rates.

Paired with a Ryzen 5 1600X at stock clocks.

Well both are good cards per se... the Super does get a nice bump in performance and the extra VRAM ensures no bottlenecking occurs from it.

Worth is relative though, if you're satisfied with the gaming performance of the RX 580 have in mind you're already getting a nice bump with a vanilla 2060 but tomorrow's games will only be more demanding and you might want to secure a greater longevity.

Which one is better as an everyday gamer?  Well the faster one.  But if you primarily just play older games and stream at 720p you can do that just fine on 2060 regular (not super).  Up to you if the extra $ may come in handy with more FPS should you start playing more high-demand AAA titles.  Or plan to switch to streaming at higher res like 1080p60 and want the extra RAM in case you change to a 1440p monitor or something.

My personal opinion, I would say spend the extra cash on the super, you could even look at the new 5500/5500XT or the 5700/5700XT cards as well, they're on point within the range of a 2060-2070 performance and are fairly priced.

Agreed heavily with Luna. It can also make a big difference knowing what CPU you are running.

Best of luck in your searches! Happy holidays!

Careful there, the 5500 XT is priced to compete with the 1660/1660 Super.  It does not have the chops to go up against the normal 2060 (it would get curb-stomped by the RTX).  That's the job of the 5700 regular.

(notice how in the RX 5500 XT review they didn't even bother to put the RTX 2060 on the graph, it tops at 5700 just to show where big-boy land starts)

do the super...otherwise you'll regret it.

Everytime and cheaped out and ended something that was not what i REALLY wanted i was disapointed.

So if you have appetite and means for a 2070 super even, go for that :)

Also play modern games on it, some of them are really awesome...tomb raider, metro exodus, battlefield 5, red dead redemption 2 etc...GTA 5 if you havnt played it yet would run great on 2060 super...

Man normally I like to recommend overbuying a bit on gpu for some lasting power, but this fucked up generation of cards is so overpriced. And I don't trust any current card to have much in the way of longevity with us the year before a new console gen starts. Look at how horrifically Kepler aged over the PS4/XB1 generation. You can't get your 580 replaced under warranty?

I'm baised against the 2060, given its price.  I'd suggest 1660ti or 2060 Super

In my opinion the 2060 is a ripoff considering its bearly better then a much cheaper 1660ti, but the Super atleast makes up some of the ground and represents a different tier of performance if 5700s and likewise CPU based x265 encoding isn't appealing to you.  Likewise the Super still overclocks better, easily in MSI afterburner, so you have a bit of headroom if you need a bit more power in the future, bringing you very close to 2070 None-Super performance.  With overclocks that is a better place to be, I'm currently running a rig that benchmarks the same (sometimes slightly better sometimes slightly worse) as 2070 and i'm very happy with it for 144hz 1080p, its a very comfy spot.

290-350$ (price fluctuates, id recommend duel fan if you can find PowerColor, Gigabyte, Sapphire, or maybe XFX models cheap), 5700 beats a 2060 Super, and with bios flash and +50 Power limit (no "overclocks") matches a 2070 None-Super, works well on x265 but not x264, that said NVENC has some real appeal for dedicated streamers that don't have a great CPU which may suffer from the overhead, or likewise just don't want to stress CPU.

Pinch of Salt notice: Haven't personally streamed that much, just going off what Level1Techs and EposVox have commented on over last few months regarding streaming and encoding options.

LogicWeasel is very much so correct. I think I was more getting after a 5700 series card, not so much the 5500 series. I appreciate you catching that and setting this fine user up for success!

If you're using OBS for streaming, VCE (AMD's version of NVENC) is actually on-par in both quality and performance with NVENC. Other software is working on implementing it as well, though open source projects are always going to have it much sooner.

If you are using OBS, then getting a 5700 non-XT would probably be your best bet for performance per dollar spent.
