Why is The i7-6700 Still so Expensive?

I am looking on ebay for a used i7 6700 and the average prices I see are around 200-220 dollars. I did bid on a few but, I was outbid by other people who wanted to pay more than $200. I was hoping because of the age and generation of this CPU that the used prices would be a little cheaper.

 

I Don't Know, should I pay 200 bucks or wait?

There are several reasons

 

Partially because the prices for new models are so high, due to lack of stock, so price modelling is "fair" based on that

 

Partially because if you have an 1151 v1 board your options are so limited, so prices are high

 

Partially because "muh Intel" and the brand keeps the pricing high

 

If you legit want an update, best to bite the bullet and get some AMD goodness. I managed to snag a 7700 for my brother at $165 a little while ago but by no means is it at all common to get a deal even that remotely good.

Boards are rather expensive as well, so I can't test the 6700 I have...

intel never lowers their price.

6th gen is the same architechture to 9th gen so new ones are basically 6th gen but overclocked - not exactly, but close enough

intel stock is low

 

just buy amd

My unRAID box is my old 6700 but yeah I also was surprised to find 6th gen still fetching some money hope they go down in a few years as I don't want to upgrade my servers hardware as it performs rock solid with the 6700

The 6700 (with or without k) and likewise 7700 are the top CPUs that fit in 1st version 1151 boards. As such, for people who started with lower CPUs, these are the best they can hope for. Combined with relative scarcity this keeps their pricing up. If you have for example an i3 or even lower, dropping in one of these is still a significant upgrade, and you don't have to reinstall all your stuff like you would for a new build which you'd have to do for anything else.

 

The same pattern can be seen through Intel's CPU range and their used pricing. The 5820k for example is practically given away, but top models of that era still hold value.

That is a great deal on a i7 7700.

AMD is looking better and better the more I wait as because I like to get deals on stuff when they are not as relevant but, they are still good, the Ryzen 7 2700 is looking pretty good to me now that the 3000 series is all the rage.

What suck now is that some of the mid-range chips from 3-5 years ago are being out performed by some of the new cheaper low-end chips.

I think if you go with something 6/12 or better you'll be okay for a few years.

Yes, I would also need new RAM too.
