Looking great man. Good to see you being brave too on getting rid of the red as I don't think it belonged in this build tbh.

When the build is finished, can we get a beauty shot of the build with the cute doggie sitting next to it being all adorable? It'd be the forum's greatest photo... :D^_^

I'll see what I can do. ;)

Thanks! :)

Looking great man. Good to see you being brave too on getting rid of the red as I don't think it belonged in this build tbh.

Yeah the red just wasn't right for this build, and the fact that is wasn't a nice

red didn't help matters either.

I must admit that I'm still dreading the moment when I press the ON switch the

next time. This board is ridiculously fickle about POSTing. Also, it has

a very curious procedure when turning on: It will turn on, then off again after

about a second, and then, if things go well, turn on again.

That moment when it turns off I always start sweating buckets before it comes

back again. Also, I actually had to get a new PSU due to that procedure. Originally,

I had planned on using a 1.7 kW Koolance PSU for this build (immersed in liquid,

then cooled by a heat exchanger via water loop). However, that PSU does not react

well to being deactivated right after having been turned on and simply refuses

to come back a second time around, so I had to get myself a new PSU.

I still have the Koolance unit around here and am hoping to use it in a future

build, it's a really stunning piece of kit (heavy as hell, too, 6.8 kg/almost

15 lbs). The good thing about the Enermax is that I can mount it vertically

(couldn't do that with the Koolance one, it needs to lay flat so that all

components are immersed in the coolant and the pump can cycle it properly),

so the arrangement of components is a lot easier with the Enermax PSU. :)

Props for actually picking the head of our defense ministry. thumb.gif

I can't say I like his party too much, they have greatly diminished the quality

of our political discourse over the past 20 years or so (although that is much

more the "achievement" of his fellow party member Christoph Blocher). They have

more or less done to our political culture what the Tea Party is doing to the US',

if admittedly with less religious nuttery (although they have found that this

course is no longer as popular as it used to be, so they've needed to change tactics

in the past few years, maybe there is some very faint hope yet).

They were the main backers of the initiative to ban the building of new minarets

(which was much less about Islam than it was about xenophobia), which is just

ludicrous IMO. I'm an equal-opportunity atheist, so if you're going to ban the

construction of minarets you should also ban the building of other phallic symbols

of religion (church towers, for instance), but hey, why be logical when you can

just discriminate against other cultures? :(

Anyway, I could ramble on, but I shall show restraint...

EDIT:

Enermax> everyone else.

Pretty much. Although looking at johnnyguru there do seem to be some contenders. :)

I could of warned you about that Koolance unit.....

Well, it runs fine on any other board, it's just not fond of the SR-2's

POSTing procedure, so I'm still hoping to use it for another build at some

point (luckily PSUs don't become outdated as quickly as other PC stuff).

My SR2 is the same, premenstrual moodswings...every POST is an adventure, get used to the FF..

Haha, yeah, when I powered it on for the first time on the Koolance PSU I thought

the board was broken. So I quickly ordered a new PSU (just to be sure) to test it,

and sure enough, with the BeQuiet that's now residing in ZEUS it powered up just

fine.

When I checked it on Friday it also took me some fiddling around to get it to POST

(didn't seem to like my memory config, although it was unchanged since last time),

so I'm sure I'll be properly nervous the next time I press that switch.

I can walk you thru the basic OC'ing with it,sadly Shamino took down his BIOS templates when he buggered off to ASUS,there are some signal tweaks that can improve stability that are not widely known/recognised.

That would be mighty nice of you. Luckily there's that nice thread about it on OCN,

I think I'll stop by there when I get to the O/C part of things (would be a shame to

leave all of this @ stock :D )

Haha, well I didn't want to exclude stuff like 4CPU, computing farms and whatever

other awesomeness I haven't even heard of.

But I must admit that even simply the aesthetics of a 2CPU board have superb

potential. Not as crammed as 4CPU PCB's, but more balanced and symmetrical

(obviously ;)) than a 1CPU board. It really is the sweet spot from what I've

seen so far.

Haha, it's not so much that I was unhappy with the build before, but ever since first

seeing G-Dubs over at OC3D do this to his MSI board last year I had this itch to scratch.

I should probably also note that the red looks not as good IRL as it does in the pics,

for some reason the camera seems to love it quite a bit more than my eyes do.

Anyway, thanks! :)

Yes, but you don't really have too. Watercooling is awesome, that's why. In other words, why not? :)

Are you able to overclock standard Xeon CPU's? if not why watercool?

The Westmere Xeons (well, LGA1366 CPUs in general AFAIK) have the nice feature that

you can overclock them by raising the BCLK. So even if you have a CPU with a

locked multiplier (which are all Xeons, as you probably suspect), you can still

get a good overclock out of them with the base clock.

Also, due to the fact that the Xeons are enterprise parts they tend to be rather

good quality chips because the need to be more tolerant of long-term use in averse

conditions (server racks), although there are of course no guarantees and the

silicon lottery is still playing a factor here as well.

The newer platforms (LGA1156, LGA2011, and I think LGA1150) no longer have this

BCLK feature (you can overclock the BCLK, but only very marginally, and you will

primarily introduce instabilities and much less performance gains, so it's not

really worth it and you need a CPU with an unlocked multi), which is why there

aren't any boards which allow you to overclock LGA2011 Xeons (a real shame IMO :( ).

As for W/C, I mostly do it because it's fun and it allows me to have much lower

noise levels (keep in mind that these Xeons, even at stock voltages, produce 130 W

of heat each). The fan on the SR-2's stock cooler is rather loud as well, and

mounting a W/C on the GPU gets you much better temps than the standard Titan air

heat sink (however beautiful and actually pretty low-noise it may be).

Yes, but you don't really have too. Watercooling is awesome, that's why. In other words, why not? :)

Yup. :)

Although, as for Why not?: Cost, TBH. :o

Thanks mate! I must admit I will certainly be pretty damn nervous when I try to

One thing about watercooling is that all you really have to change down the line would have to be maybe the liquid and add/change gpu w/c block. The rad++ is a one time purchase, it's expensive now but it'll last you for quite some time :)

I understand why you're nervous, but at least it looks nice. Thankfully you're not as unlucky as my friend with the SR-2 that didn't work after putting the w/c block on it :/ He didn't have the patience to RMA so he just bought a new one.
