Stay with I7 4790k or upgrade

I've got a 4790k that's served me well, but I've noticed some stuttering and slow down scenarios playing battlefield 1 multiplayer. I upgraded my ram to 16 gb a while back and it helped. It was a lot worse before that, but I still come across it at 1440p, even if I lower settings. GPU is a 1070ti. One example where things seem to slow is when I switch to looking through a scope or optic. It just doesnt seem like a smooth transition and im not sure if thats a CPU or GPU thing.

Im less concerned about overall frame rates since I can just lower settings to increase that, atlhough if a CPU upgrade improves them thats great. Im more concerned about overall smoothness.

Im looking at a ryzen 3700x. Would doing that result in any noticeable performance bump at 1440p?

There's no reason to replace a 1070ti for 1440p

What's your budget/country for the CPU and stuff?

The 3700X is nice, Ryzen 4000 won't be out for a while

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

What games or other software do you need to run?

I'd say you would definitely benefit from a 3700x just for the core count alone will help with those calculations alone. The thing i've learned with AMD though being on this forum is you really need ram with good timings and speed. so if the ram you have now is sufficient for a ryzen build then go for it. otherwise i'd upgrade to a 8700k or a 9900k if you can afford it.

EDIT: I just saw it... 1866Mhz is not fast enough for ryzen you will need to get at least 3200Mhz Ram if you plan on going that route.

EDIT2: If you can't afford to swing the AMD route at that point. Get a new 8700k and potentially a new cooler OC it. Then in your BIOS you can OC the ram to 2133 at least and be just fine there.

CPU will definitely help with stuttering in games like battlefield, i upgraded from my 4770 to a 9700 and there's a huge difference

3700X would be excellent, especially for Battlefield 1 or V. Both brutalize quadcores, run much better on 6+ cores. Speaking of which if you want to save some money, you can snag a 3600. As for RAM, 3600Mhz CL16 or 3200MHz CL14 is the best, 3200Mhz CL16 or 3000Mhz CL15 will be fine if you can't find a reasonably priced kit of the other stuff.

Are you overclocking the cpu? You could do that to get a little bit more out of it. I would not think that at 1440p, with a I7 4790k OC there should be a lot of problem. Are you OC the ram or is it at default speed? All this is important to know.

Furthermore, to know what is exactly bottlenecking you, open MSI Afterburning while playing an see if the processor or gpu gets max out and when.

I'll wait until black friday to see if any good deals pop up for the 3700x or an i7/i9. I would definitely replace the ram with 3600mhz. I think I would have to anyway since my ram is ddr3 and I think they require ddr4.

If you can wait for 10 series intel, I’d do that or the new amd stuff.

Used my 4790k with a 1080 on 1440p. Max settings before all the crappy pitches, easily sat at 120 frames. Was nice until certain maps would keep the cpu pegged at 100%. Isn’t ideal for multiplayer.

No amount of overclock can save that weak cpu.

to me what significantly changed my gaming experience was the graphics card. It's okay that I have a seventh generation processor, but before I played at 10fps maximum with a gt730 4GB DDR5 and when I bought the RTX2070 I went to play above 100Fps or 200 depending on the game. I don't know if an RTX will work well with a fourth generation processor. I speak from experience.

That's correct on the ram.  Whether you go Ryzen or newer Intel...it will require a new mobo and ram as well (ddr4).

Have you overclocked your CPU? I've got a 4790k as well, and you shouldn't be getting stuttering.

No they aren't. At least not relative to the price.

I havent oc’d since ive read ocing the 4790k makes no difference in games unless you get a substantial OC, which would be hard to do with an h60 cooler.

Then yeah you'd be fine getting the ryzen if you are getting to new ram and yes you will have to. if you're still using ddr3 it seems you're quite a few years back. you'll be basically buying a whole new system at that point.

Take a picture of your Battlefield graphic settings. Before investing in a new PC, most of the adjustment can be fixed with in-settings. Your looking to replace the entire PC, but I'm guessing except the PSU, GPU, and possibly the PC case.

Well you will want a better cooler, but that's nonsense. Even just bumping up the multiplier to 45 would make a noticeable difference.

Can run that cpu at 5.0ghz. Won’t really matter. Any game that runs like bf1 is too much for it. Unless you’re the type to cap frames and do a million tweaks.

Better off getting new hardware and fixing the issue now.  Ran mine at 4.8 and it would barley keep up with an old Kepler card in 1440p. Didn’t care much for the voltage needed so stopped running it so high.

The 4790k is still a good cpu even in modern games. The only time you will see sub 100% cpu utilization is if something else is bottlenecking your cpu. The slowdown when scoping is whats referred to as lows. BF1 is a hell of a game to drive at 1440p ultra and youre not going to hit that 144fps even on a 2080ti 9900k setup Lowering setings does help. Your cpu is still relevent today. Id lower settings and wait till new Intel cpus come out.

Ill probably wait to see the 10700k since it should be out in the next few months, unless i can get some screaming black friday deal.

I thought intel was just going to wait for 10nm or 7nm but it looks like theyre gonna pump out one more series of 14nm desktop cpus soon.

Games don't benefit from that technology, that's usually why they work editing, etc.
