Electronics Vending Machines? ¯\(°_o)/¯

Hi All,

 

I work for an IT solutions provider in Europe and we were asked to come up with a concept of providing employees with IT supplies (anything from mouse to laptop) without having to go through a complete order process with sending every order in separate packages, which could all in all take up to multiple weeks (including internal approval processes).

 

What the company would like, is for the employee to go to a computer screen, choose what equipment they want, pay with their company "credit card" and leave with a new headset. So the challenge for us is to hold a stock of inventory on location at the companies offices (all over Europe) without having our own employees there, that could control the inventory or the transactions. We found online that some institutions have laptop vending machines, which sounds interesting. We also thought of cages that can only be unlocked after paying or maybe security cameras for safety.

 

Has anyone of the LTT-community ever heard of such a solution?

Have you personally worked with a company providing such services (maybe even with a complete payment system and maybe even within Europe)?

Or do you have a different completely outlandish idea (or joke to keep our morale up o(^▽^)o)?

If you've ever been to a major airport, there are vending machines by Best Buy where you can buy headphones, earbuds, cables, etc. Might be worth looking into where you can modify the design.

I've seen an electronics vending machine in an European Airport, it had everything from mouses to laptops.

 

But a locker system with a screen in the middle like this would probably be easier to setup and use:

I might be wrong and a maybe looking into the wrong direction, but some companies that are basically a massive workshop have vending machines everywhere that allow employees to get tools and safety gear with their badge. So if their gloves or safety googles or wrench or whatever breaks or is worn out they can just get whatever they need to do their job properly and safely from a vending machine.

 

So, I personally don't have any experience with this. But it might be a good idea to check? I have no idea where to start but I know it exists.

It might not be ideal for laptops but for smaller stuff like chargers, mice, earbuds or whatever it should be a good idea?

Do your employees have badges that currently work off an RFID or similar system? you could set up a room with supplies that operates like the pop up Amazon stores. Security checkpoint at the door that scans their badge and cameras and sensors set up in the room and on the supplies. Or that could be an added level of security on top of one of these other ideas.

Most major US airports have those BestBuy machines. I believe I saw one in Charlotte, NC, Miami International, and ? Cleveland Hopkins

I think developing an Amazon-grade solution might be a bit out of budget, but great suggestions so far, thank you everyone.

 

One of the challenges would also be to find human resources for refilling on location, so if there is an established industry doing this for airports (notoriously high security facilities) we could avoid having to hire people ourselves.

Vending machines are common in many large manufacturing plants in North America to provide basic needs and consumables like a can of WD-40 or a end mill.  Use your employee badge or number to get things.  You can track who gets what and how much and also control the types of things it will issue to each person. If you are a office worker it will give you a can of WD-40 to fix your squeaky chair but not a $50 carbide end mill to sell on eBay.  There are whole systems you and get with real time inventory, order alerts and there are services that will stock them. Probably something like it in Europe. Know there is a company doing it in the UK.

Can't think of the name. Was over there 3-5 years ago doing some work and seen the company then. Quick google turns up a number for "tool vending machines UK"

Think one of the big US players call there system AutoCrib as in Automated tool crib so searches like that might help. 

Many offer a number of types of machines from standard vending machine like you would get a bag of chips from or simple touch screen unlocking the drawers of a Lista type cabinet. To systems that control big banks of lockers.

At my sisters work they have exactly what you described. They specialize in Apple MDM so the machine is just Apple products but if you are an employee you swipe your badge and can get magic mice, airpods, ipads, cables, or whatever for a heavily discounted and sometime free price

MSC here in the USA does the company I work for, with an inventory in out system tied to personnel key cards.  In fact they run the entire unit, stock levels and pay for it so they can keep our business for their Industrial supplies.

In fact I think that the RFID could be your best idea to solve your problems with the global mail machines, like the Omniva one.

 

DB with all infos about the product

RFID sticker on the box

Box shipped to location

"Vending machine Manager" puts it in a free "slot"

RFID synchronises with system in VM and updates "Vending machine catalog"

employee goes on website or screen on Vending Machine, order products needed, validates

slots open automagically

Alert goes to "Vending Machine Manager" et he repleneshes it.

When no more products ledt, "VM Manager" sends alert on central system

"VM Head Manager" on mothership sends another batch of goods to "VM Site".

 

Very schematically this could be viable, if you already have the internal resource to link that to an internal ERP, which, if you're a big company, you should already have.

 

Yes? No?

Of course, I "skipped" a few steps... ?

The RFID-system for the vending machine goes a bit over my head ^_^ also we're kind of looking for a solution that is already established in similar industries.

We ourselves are only a small company that is contracted by a bigger company, but I don't think we would use their ERP.
