Online services that claim to anonymize users’ personal data aren’t as secure as we think, according to researchers who found over 99 percent of people can be identified from a handful of supposedly anonymous data points.


Doubters will be quickly silenced with the online tool the researchers developed to accompany their paper, published in Nature Communications on Tuesday. Using just three commonly-requested demographic attributes – birthdate, zip code, and gender – the program is able to successfully identify users about 83 percent of the time. And with 5 and more data points the machine-learning model gets it right over 99 percent of the time.

“The goal of anonymization is so we can use data to benefit society,” Yves-Alexandre de Montjoye, one of the researchers, told CNBC. “This is extremely important but should not and does not have to happen at the expense of people’s privacy.”

 

Given how many data points many online platforms contain, the risk of deanonymization isn’t just a risk – it’s a certainty. Credit reporting agencies, for example, hoard as many as 248 separate demographic identifiers on their customers. Nearly three quarters of Americans are concerned about sharing personal information online, according to a 2015 Harvard Business Review survey – and rightfully so, given the near-daily frequency of major hacks, breaches, and leaks – but few understand the complexities of what actually happens to their data when they submit it.

The site currently only offers testing for the UK and US, but it's worth entering fake details on the main page test even if you don't live in the UK or US because only after entering details does the site go to a page where they explain things a bit more.

 

 

Though I don't live in the US, I entered details using a US location and I received these results:

Other people have, on average, 83% chance of being correctly re-identified, making you much less unique than the rest of the US population.

 

There's a 2nd test on the site (have to do the first one to get to it) that adds a few more details, which makes the identification rate go up to over 99%.

 

It could be that GDPR and similar rule such as California's that takes effect January 2020 are not sufficient to ensure data privacy, and that a re-evaluation of the entire problem may need to be done as more studies shown how flawed and ineffectual basic privacy rules really are. I already think GDPR and California's upcoming rules don't go nearly far enough.

Hum... Ok... What's new here?

 

I'm reading about this for the past 15 years... We fought exactly because of this at the european parliament and what was the exact response to the "professional alert" against this? More control, more Data Mining, look where we are now?

Algorithms developped to recognize who is going to post messages/organize with a high risk to participate on civil manifestations in order to "control" civil unrest?

 

You want anonymity and yet everyone owns a smartphone which is always connected to the web?

It is regarded as "suspicious" if you decide to switch off your phone?

 

Do I really need to quote Benjamin Franklin here and now?

 

At some point "people" need to face their own actions and inconsistencies...

With how ingrained technology is now-a-days and how invasive it is, misinformation is a lot more useful than trying to stay evasive.

This shouldn't surprise anyone, but it's nice that maybe some new people are now aware. Not that anything is changing because nobody wants to regulate this shit

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

To be fair without the postcode this method gets significantly less reliable. Postcode significantly reduces the size of the dataset of possibble matches. Without it, well the odds start to really go down of getting it right, and i'm pretty stingy about giving theat out.

It has been widely known that you can de-randomize such data with enough of it or at least some very pertinent pieces like postcode.    Once you add the IP it is virtually impossible to be a nobody. 

 

People need to be aware though, that having the ability and actually doing/allowing it as a matter of everyday functioning are two different things.   

Grammar and spelling is not indicative of intelligence/knowledge.  Not having the same opinion does not always mean lack of understanding.

To add to this, a quick search shows that in england and wales there's between 1300 and 2000 people with any given birthday depending on the date.

 

All the sources for poscode districts include scotland and northern ireland, but even a significant reduction on the figure of 3000 and change still means at most you can expect there to be one person in a given postcode area, (assuming roughly even population distribution which definitely isn't the case, but also probably isn't wildly out by more than a few times in most cases ethier), and sex cutting the pool in half again and what would otherwise by a one in several hundred problem becomes a one in a handful at worst, and in many cases your birthday plus postcode prefix is going to be a unique combination.

So yeah, more data out there of many and services like assistants and social media companies, all knowing more about you through inderect ways too than people that know you.
