Google - An Unethical Representation of the Truth

There's been a long string of issues stemming from Google in recent years but this seems to be one of the most disturbing.

An expose was made regarding Google's plans in the near future which may concern political, cultural, and social issues -

Explained by The Quartering -

On one of the clips, Jen Gennai, Head of Responsible Innvoation (Google), says -

Quote

The reason we launched our A.I. principles is because people were not putting that line in the sand - That they were not saying what's fair and what's equitable so we're like, "well we are a big company, we're going to say it."

[...]

My definition of fairness and bias specifically talks about historically marginalized communities. And that's who I care about. Communities who are in power and have traditionally been in power are not who I'm solving fairness for.

[...]

Our definition of fairness is one of those things that we thought would be like, obvious, and everyone would agree to and it wasn't. ['coz] There are the same people who voted for the current president who do not agree with our definition of fairness.

Basically what this means is that they, being Google, will try to define what is fair and just in their own eyes through manipulating data representation like in Google searches. First of all, we do not know how far their arm stretches.

Also, what the heck is going on?

Jen Gennai then says -

Quote

Elizabeth Warren is saying that we should break up Google. And like, I love her but she's very misguided, like that will not make it better it will make it worse because now all these smaller companies who don't have the same resources we do will be charged with preventing the next Trump situation, it's like a small company cannot do that.

For those who do not know - Elizabeth Warren is a U.S Senator who said that she was planning to break up big tech companies -

Quote

“We have these giant tech companies that think they rule the earth,” she told a crowd of about 300 people in Long Island City. “I don’t want a government that’s here to work for the giant tech companies. I want a government that’s here to work for the people.”

Guarav Gite, Google Software Engineer -

Quote

...but then there are things which are called 'ML Fairness'

You know, you need to be fair. So they're trying to modify the model such that even if the data for a female CEO says it's low, it still balances out.

'ML Fairness' - Machine Learning Fairness

from one of the slides it says in the 'Policy Definition' - "algorithmic unfairness" means unjust or prejudicial treatment of people that is related to sensitive characteristics such as race, income, sexual orientation, or gender, through algorithmic systems or algorythmically aided decision-making.

They're trying to teach A.I.s how to determine what is fair in their own eyes. Wow.

Original source video -

Spoiler

I think this whole thing is shocking but it's not like I wasn't expecting it to happen with everything that's been going on lately regarding Google and it's ethics (LMAO).

For me this means a lot of things. Big things. Scary things. Some George Orwell kind of things...

You can bark like a dog, but that won't make you a dog.

You can act like someone you're not, but that won't change who you are.

Finished Crysis without a discrete GPU,15 FPS average, and a lot of heart

How I plan my builds -

Spoiler

For me I start with the "There's no way I'm not gonna spend $1,000 on a system."

Followed by the "Wow I need to buy the OS for a $100!?"

Then "Let's start with the 'best budget GPU' and 'best budget CPU' that actually fits what I think is my budget."

Realizing my budget is a lot less, I work my way to "I think these new games will run on a cheap ass CPU."

Then end with "The new parts launching next year is probably gonna be better and faster for the same price so I'll just buy next year."

Is any of this really a surprise? After all, Google doesn't want left-wing propaganda to appear on people's screens.

I think you missed the point. In practical cases, say you do a search, you Google whatever you want, the results shown are already manipulated favoring one thing over another based on their judgement and not factual results how do you then determine what actually was the top result? It's like playing a game of Family Feud in Google Searches but top results were already filtered and might exclude things you'd normally expect to see or include things that weren't supposed to be on the list.

Well considering they dont want Trump. They dont want the right wing propaganda too.

Honestly if you dont like Google's politics then dont buy their products. But as it stands, every company is political. They all give money to those worthless fucks in DC (Bernie Sanders being the exception). Thanks to Citizens United.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

But what has changed? Google used to show biased results, they still show biased results, and they always will show biased results.

That's not the whole story. Another key thing to note is Google using it's power to influence not just North America but everyone who uses it's products. Also I noticed your comment goes with your title as cookie distributor.

I get what you're trying to say. But please just try to watch both videos. I just posted this 16min ago and the first video is 16min long and your first comment was 10min ago...

When you try and force fairness based on groups you are only increasing unfairness and discrimination. The thing that makes things fair is not having any distinction based on what group someone comes from. I dont see why you would set up an AI that is aware of such things in the first place. The least amount of intervention is likely the best.

And that's why Ive started using Google as my main search engine 20 years ago.    I want relevant results.  Not just a bunch of pages to pop up with the most views. That would just be porn anyway :P hehe

Also.  Big companies need good regulations.  Not control.     Google is at the same time under fire by left and right at the moment. Which is a bit ironic really.

Regulations are a form of control.

I know the Google search engine gives the best results at the moment but what if that changed and they only show results based on what they want you to see and not what you want to see? Right now I guess you don't probably even check the 2nd or 3rd pages in Google searches but imagine what you wanted to find was in the 5th page but they kept showing you 4 pages of biased BS.

Heh. The quartering isn't actually the source. I just linked a video of him explaining what he got from the other video which I linked as the source...

Right, as though project veritas was any more believable. Please don't post conspiracy theories as news.

Isnt it really just twistings Youtubes move to try downplay conspiracy theories and missinformation? Just to make it seem bad, and there is a certain set of channels getting hit by this.

No, these are channels that are regularly caught blatantly lying and extrapolate their own political narrative from a few scattered sentences out of context and without any insight. There is no journalism or investigation involved, it's pure conspiracy theory crafting. If you look at what is being quoted it's just a few of vague statements made by two Google employees in unofficial settings. There is no news here, let alone any tech news. If you want to believe them that's your prerogative but let's not pretend they are more than a leap of imagination.

In other words. Googles plan to remove conspiracy and false information is working exactly as planned and channels who live on that sort of content are as expected rebelling.

There are offcourse fallout, but i think that will be resolved quite quickly

Dunno, these people apparently still have a channel. I'm not even saying they shouldn't, I'm just saying there's no place for that on this forum's news section
