Valve releases Steam Chat App

Quote

The new Steam Chat mobile app is a modernized Steam chat experience available for free on iOS and Android platforms.

The app includes many key features of the Steam Client desktop chat, including:

Friends List - See who’s in game or online at a glance. Never miss an opportunity to play.

Rich Chat - Your chats get even better with higher fidelity links, videos, tweets, GIFs, Giphy, Steam emoticons, and more.

Invite Links - Add new friends on Steam with a link. Generate an invite link you can text or email.

Customizable Notifications - Mobile notifications mean you'll never miss a message or game invite. You can customize your notifications per friend, group chat, and chat channel.

Group Chats - Get everyone on the same page. Groups make it easier to do things like stay in touch with your communities and organize game night with your best friends.

I don't really care that much as I barely use Steam chat, but it's probably for the better considering the main Steam app is pretty bad.

Cool. Just a couple years late at this point.

Steam chat used to be my main form of communication with many people, but that has switched over to Discord mainly now. Steam just didn't really add much to the experience, on top of deleting some links to some websites.

EDIT:

One sec.. Did Valve just pull a 'Facebook'? Splitting the messaging part of their app into a separate app, just like what Facebook did with Messenger?

One cool thing though - which may have something to do with recent.. Chinese news - is this:

Looks technically good but why not just roll this into the existing steam phone app? Seems dumb.

How about Valve updates the base Steam app to, I dunno, make it so that you don't fucking get logged off after not using the app for more than 1 minute?

Can't say I've ever had or heard of that issue.

It's been an issue on both the devices I've used the authenticator for, even when just a single account is linked to that phone.

I'm using a modified 2015 version of the steam app since v1 is the only version that supports "stay connected to steam in the background" sadly all the features outside the friends list and chat (including the authentication) no longer function.

Yeah I wish they would fix the original apps. I get no pop-up notifications on android with it. So frustrating.

I refuse to read threads whose author does not know how to remove the caps lock!

So what's the point of the Steam app now?  It isn't as heavy as Facebook, so separating Steam chat from the app is pointless.

There's also Discord, so I guess it's even more pointless.
