BOINC Pentathlon 2019

Go to solution Solved by jakkuh_t,

Seems like the easiest way for most people to help out is in the Marathon.

This involves downloading BOINC, selecting the "World Community Grid" project, and then selecting the sub-project "OpenZIKA".

1. Download + Install BOINC (https://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php

2. Open BOINC and click "Add Project"

3. Select the "World Community Grid" project, and then click on their website url. (https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/discover.action)

4. On their Website, click "Join Now" at the top left or right depending. Enter your information and Register.

5. Once presented with the Sub project selection, choose "OpenZIKA" and click next. It will download a program, but you don't need it.

6. Go back to the BOINC app and click "Next >". Login with the World Community Grid account that you just signed up for.

Your BOINC app will now benchmark your system, and then start running.

BUT, you still need to set your team to the LTT forum one.

7. Navigate to the team selection page, and login if you aren't already (https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/team/viewMyTeam.do)

8. Type in "LinusTechTips" in the "Contains:" field.

9. Click on the "LinusTechTips_Team" result that shows up. Once the page loads click "Join Team".

You will now be BOINCing for the LTT team :D

This is the easiest way to help out the cause, but there are more beneficial / advanced ways to do so if you're interested. Refer to the OP for more information.

Holy darn, that is nuts.

I think I long ago disable ECM back in a previous Pent.

My main rig barely using past 6GB atm with 85% usage.

You may want to set app_config to restrain yoyo if going to run ECM.  There are max_concurrent flags to control the max a project can run.

That server's using 25.3GB of RAM and 16GB of that is just for the Linux VM so ~9GB ECM is using. I disabled it on the website so any future work I get shouldn't be more of that.

Hmmmm, those look like the CPU units.  Probably best to go to the Einstein website and set it to only give out the GPU ones.

This is how a GPU WU shows up:

Hmmm, I'm not sure.  I no longer have any AMD cards to test with and been a long time ago when I had a 7970 and Titan.  I think Einstein@Home can tell the difference per machine.  But, not 100% sure on that.

You just tell it to accept both WUs and the manager will pick the correct ones for the machines

Wow, just adding one gpu thread is cooking my cpu.  I went from 75* with a mild overclock of 3.6 just running zika.  To stock speeds with 11 threads on zika and one thread on gpu running at 94* now ?

Found the problem.  Fan software issue.  ?

@Ben Quigley

Add 2 more servers to yoyo, 4x E5-4650. Yoyo doesn't really seem to get much points per day compared to WCG though, like a third or worse.

Since we're competing per-project that doesn't matter as everyone else is getting the same point scale.

Elsewhere: added two more systems. Nothing to get excited about, both i3-4150T (2 core 3.0 GHz). This is me doing the HT testing vaguely discussed yesterday. I've only put them on WCG since that has the longest left to run, so the info might actually have some value.

Basically one is set to 2c2t (HT off), the other 2c4t (HT on). Boinc set to use all threads, which one will do the most work? As time goes by it should get more accurate as I'm not sure how consistent scoring will be in the short term. Both are DDR3-1600 systems, although the 2c2t system is slightly lower latency. Don't have time to mess around with ram right now to balance that. I hope it isn't significant. Just spotted, the 2c2t system is running iGPU, other has 750Ti, also hope that isn't significant...

Now I need to open another window, it is getting warm around here...

Boinc system creators did offer guidance on credit issuing, but essentially projects do whatever they like.

There's was a fuss on PrimeGrid when CPU+GPU work was made available on one subproject. Points were scaled on CPU work over time, but the GPU app was so much faster it was like printing money free credit for all. That attracted overall boinc credit hunters and some were concerned about point inflation if projects started to offer more points to get people in.

It is what it is... I basically crunch for the individual project, not for boinc cross-project credit.

How is the avg credit so bad on the E5-8890v4 system, my other ones too. I ran my gaming system over night, hmn-ws01, and it got 3.5k point. How can 2x E5-2667 server be doing so badly compared to that.....

I don't know how the average is calculated, but it is probably over a longer time scale than you think (days) so short term changes can throw things out. I tend to ignore it.
