Hi there :)

I have a Question for the Canadians on this forum..

I got a friend from Canada (Toronto area) who is in desperate needs of a new Graphics card, and i happen to have a 1070 just laying collecting dust,. So my question is Do any of you Canadians know roughly how much he would have to pay in customs and taxes, if i where to send him my old card from Denmark :)

Thanks for now. :)

not at all, Canada requires something to cost less than $60 for it to be a gift and cost nothing in taxes. A 1070 sure worth more than that, unless you can prove that it doesn't work.

then again I'm not sure if personal items count

I've never been required to do that. You don't need to prove in any meaningfull way that it doesn't work.
Or just claim it's not worth 60$.

it's not really hard to get around that..

There's no duty on computer parts. At worst, you'd probably have to pay tax, at 13% on whatever you value it at.

If you plan to send it as a gift, you should include a card or something. Lying on customs forms is fraud.

On a related not when ever I order from dealextreme they list their products as being worth under $25 regardless. Lying to duties is common practice for canadians.

the risk is only if something happens to the package, you can't claim the true monetary value. not that electronics are taxed anyway...

You just pay the sales tax on the sale value. Your friend just has to go down to cbsa to pay before he can receive the package.

I think when you visist you have a certain spending limit per person before you have to pay but when something is shipped it depends on what they declare the value of.

For god's sake please don't send a GTX 1070 through the mail while claiming it as $60 or less in value!

If the package is damaged, or lost, you're SOL, and that's a rather expensive mistake to make.

Claim it as a gift, sure, but list the correct used value, and also MAKE SURE TO FULLY INSURE THE SHIPMENT for the correct used value.

Hi again :) First of thanks for the replies and sorry for not responding to any of them xD

The card got sent as a "letter" on the 23'th of April, as a Gift with a declared value of 200$ my local mail office said that the expected transit time would be 4-6days, as of today its been 9 working days and the recipient still haven't received the package, How long does Customs in Canada (Ontario area) normally take to process packages :)?

I was sadly a cheapskate when i sent the package so i choose a shipping option that didn't include tracking (Sending it with tracking would cost 5times as much) so i sadly cant see where in the work the package is.. :/

You sent a GTX 1070 in the mail without tracking? Are you fucking stupid? No offense intended, but that was kind of dumb.

I hope it arrives, but seriously man, if it doesn't, you're SOL and you just lost more than $200.

Regarding the card, it has no value for me, it was a card i found in a dumpster at work (along with 3 other gfx cards and a motherboard with an i7-7700k all working) So if it gets lost on the way its rly not that big of an issue, sure i would rather see my friend geting use of it...

Usually they'll have to pay tax on the value of it and possibly a customs fee.

Of all things I have bought / imported through the US and other countries, I have yet to pay customs import taxes, weather it be electronics, car parts or other stuff.

In terms of how long customs can take, it depends on multiple factors. Is it heading into, or out of Canada? If out of, then typically customs is incredibly quick, and the destination customs will be the delayer.

In terms of heading into customs, it can often take days, a week. Usually not longer than a week, unless it's raising red flags (eg: coming from a country with known smuggling issues, obvious mislabeling, stated values that don't match what's inside the box, etc).

There's no magic number I can give you. In theory it could take weeks (but if so, it's likely because something went wrong). Most of the time, it takes a day or three.

I get that the card has no value to you - but what about your friend that you're sending it to? I'd definitely be disappointed if I was promised a GTX 1070, and then it never arrived due to no tracking or no insurance. I'd understand, of course, because a gift is not something you're entitled to of course.

But, even if you don't value it, it still has value. You could easily sell a working GTX 1070 on eBay or Kijiji for $300 no problem. More if you're willing to wait. So, the item has value, regardless.

If you sent it overseas or internationally as a "letter" (don't know how Canada Post wouldn't handle that, since lettermail wouldn't accept a package large enough for a GPU to fit inside), and your post office promised you it would take 4-6 days, they lied. Non-tracked international mail to Canada can often take 4-6 weeks or even longer.
