Radeon VII or rtx 2080 8gb?

One of my church mate asked which of the two to get. 

He plans to play games on a 4k monitor and edit videos on the same monitor. 

He plays alot of  tomb raider and fps games and he does advertising videos.

If he is doing video editing, then the Radeon VII would be a better choice, for the HBM2 and amount of memory.

check which program he uses and read reviews online on whether the RTX 2080 or R7 pulls ahead. they perform pretty similarly at 4K for gaming.

Whichever is cheaper.


VII will have higher power consumption but it is better for production workloads. Personally, I don't think that either card pulls away, so I'd just get the cheapest option

Well depends on what software he uses for work, check if you can find any tests of the two cards in that software and pick the one that pulls ahead. Both are good for games so I'd base it off what works the best for his work

Radeon VII has a bit higher power consumption and is slightly slower in games, but is still a very competent card imo. If work is more important, go with Radeon as it just has more grunt and more VRAM. If gaming is more important, then RTX 2080.

The real question is:
8GiB VRAM vs. 16GiB VRAM.

Do you need 16GiB VRAM for your workloads or do you rather have 16GiB to be on the safe side??

 

For Adobe Premiere the Radeon 7 is better because of the 16GiB VRAM (and HBCC, wich can mitigate high VRAM consumption).

And in this case, if the VRAM is full, your desktop crashes for whatever reason.
