PC 60 FPS vs Ps4 Pro

Is there any difference between ps4 pro's fps (perhaps 30) and pc's fps (30) at 4k? Some of my friends are trying to make me think that 30 fps on a console is not as 30 fps on a pc.

I mean, besides graphics quality and resolution, 30 fps is 30 fps

Well to start with. 4K on console is quite often upscaled from a different Rez than 4K. This doesnt apply to all titles offcourse. It just means some titles arent rendered in 4K. Same can be done on PC if you so please. 

 

Second consoles run at lower settings to achieve the performance it does.

 

Assuming both devices run 30 fps max and min, its identical.

So its a bit of a tricky thing with the ps4.

 

Quoting from a reddit thread "the PS4 Pro is actually taking 1440p (2,560 x 1,440) and upscaling it to 4K (3840 × 2160)."

 

So its more like 1440p scaled up using the PS4 Pros admitedly pretty good upscaler. Compare this to say the Xbox One X which usually does render at native 4k, or the PC you asked about in your OP which also theoretically is running native 4k the PS4 is going to be a tiny bit more blurry.

 

Plus on the PC you get the added benefit of tweaking settings to your preference. Take me for example, at 4k aiming for lower settings I disable all AA, motion blur, turn down special effects and particles, model geometry, etc so that I can turn things like lighting, shadows, and textures up higher.

30 fps on a console is actually worse, the input lag (and the slow display + image effects) of the TV make it far worse compared to monitors.

That (as admitted in your statement) had nothing to do with the system. Yiu can use consoles and PCs on any type of display you want.

Two of my friends have Playstations (one of them has a Pro) and they experience noticeable FPS drops in many games. Consoles aren't as optimized as Sony would have you think.

No. But there is a massive difference in what you are actually looking at on screen. Console decreases the quality in certain things to achieve 30 fps while a PC can achieve much higher fps without decreasing anything in the quality of certain things.

 

The real question is, why do you ask this question? PC is hopefully what you'd rather be gaming on.

Coming from someone who actually dicks around with that kind of thing, it entirely depends on the game.

If a game has a good vertical sync implementation on both consoles and PC, then it should roughly feel the same to play. I'll take Driver: San Francisco as an example: that on the Xbox 360 has a really nice v-sync implementation and it very rarely buckles below 60fps and the same goes for the PC version, least on my PC. Both roughly feel the same to play, even through a capture card on Component video. That being said I'd rather play the Xbox 360 version but that's a different discussion entirely.

Now, if a game doesn't have a good v-sync implementation (Valve games feel really terrible to play with v-sync on, all of them) then it will likely feel worse on console, especially if that game is capped at 30fps.

Exactly that is how it is.

The System you play it is independant from the display, that described above is an issue with the Display, not the console.

Depends what you are really talking about, the game and so on.

 

In general: fps = fps, regardless where it is done.


However you have different settings on PC and Console usually the console is somewhere in the medium - high range while you have ULTRA and more than that on PC as well.

 

Inputlag and other stuff shouldn't be too much different either, if using the same screen for both.

If we want to be technical, 30 FPS may not feel like 30 FPS due to how the frames were spaced out. Console developers will try to aim for consistent frame times, but a PC game may not be designed as such since consistency can be hit or miss depending on the environment.

Assuming both use the same monitor resolution:

Moving from 30 FPS Console to 30 FPS PC = Big NO!

Moving from 30 FPS Console to 60 FPS PC = So-so, it's just a side move.

Moving from 30 FPS Console to >120 FPS PC = Absolutely worth it.

 

For also moving to higher monitor resolution, it's a different story..

Well on pc you should aim for vrr-range fps. I think it usually starts on 35-40Hz. It will be a lot better as vsync adds 1-2 frame delay because of the buffer, and with low 30 fps that is 33ms or 66ms.
