I used to put together custom Android builds, particularly for the Skyrocket. It pays to know how to read little snippets of code here and there. More importantly, it pays to know what those little bits of code control, and how you can edit them without bricking your phone. Amongst our Skyrocket modding community, which was admittedly small given how limited the Skyrocket's distribution was, I don't know that anyone was capable of sitting down and writing an Android distro from the ground up. We all knew what to look for in the code, how to change it, and how to test and make sure the changes made were safe. Even if you're modding a game, you don't need to be able to code to do it.

For most games, being able to code doesn't open up a game's files like opening up a book. Sure, mods are one thing, but most games are locked down pretty hard.

Cheat Engine on the other hand...

 

If you want to mod a certain game, you'd be better off grabbing code off of the game, figuring out what it does, then editing it directly. I wouldn't call this "learning to code" - that'd be too broad of a statement.

Cooking is a rather universally useful skill. It'd be more like "Should accountants know how to solve mathematical problems of theoretical physics?" They're loosely related, in both involve math...

It would probably benefit them more to learn how Windows works a bit more, so they can troubleshoot a game if it crashes etc. Coding and Gaming do have an association, because computer programmers are more likely to game, and gaming isn't an occupation.

learn to code, definitely no need,

 

but messing with codes can be very useful, like playing with regedit / games config files etc. any way everything can be easily found on the web when you need to.

I really hate the term gamers btw, seems like a marketing term to sell stuff (looking at you Min-Liang Tan u cheapskate, make a real product u didn't copy, even a toaster will do).

Yes, so you can use them safely.

 

You need to know how things work for safety/basic maintenance but not necessarily how to construct it.

Programming is not for everyone, you can't just mash the keyboard a bit and expect results. Hell, some of the best programmers that I know don't even play video games because they're too busy working - either on side projects or just their regular 9 to 5. Making games also isn't easy, so if gamers get into coding it's usually to make a game but then you won't have much time for other games. At least that's my experience

9 to 5?

The best programmer Ive seen live and sleeps in their offices with their keyboard as the pillow and coffee as breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

well some gamers may not be as logical as they need to be to code, i know many people who have no idea how to code in html but still play browser games

unless the user wants to make a mod for the game in it's native coding language (e.g minecraft, civ5(most of it's crap is LUA, the rest that handles hardware and other crap is C++), garys mod (depending on the mod itself, some aren't LUA based from what i know)) it's not something that crosses most minds,

the only reason you would learn the basics of the language is if you are debugging something but even then most moddable game engines catch misbehaving mods due to how most are built (by keeping an eye on what mod causes a crash/conflict, logging the specific part of the mod that is causing a problem, then logging it and showing the user what went wrong).

Yeah but why should people who play games have to?

If you don't know how to program mods or want to, you press a subscribe button on a mod manager and you're good to go.

 

I'm studying my second year of computer science and have no interest in making my own mods, I'd much rather just press a button and have someone else do it for me. 

This is like saying that people who know how to like watch movies should know how to make one, it doesn't have a great correlation

what about a mod that you want that doesn't exist, it's called fulfilling a need/want for a reason.
