Help me? LTT inspired my newest PC build!

Hey everyone!

 

First off I just want to give a huge thank you to the LTT community and Linus Tech Tips on Youtube. I have learned so much about computers over the past year and am excited to share my plans of a build with....wait for it.. up to date parts?! What?!

 

Anyways. I will start this off by first saying, yes. Ryzen is my brain of choice as AMD powered my current and first ever PC built with my own two hands (Phenom II X4 840). So I have chosen an Asus ROG Strix X470-F motherboard and some G.Skill F4-3200C16D-GTZRX, which I'll double up on later. These two parts I have already purchased, so there is no going back now. The only remaining parts I need to purchase to have a ready to go unit is the CPU and PSU. (Reusing GPU, AiO cooler, case, fans and storage).

 

Heres where I start to second guess myself: My current usage on the phenom unit is gaming (limited to its capabilities). But I do edit and create content as a hobby which could soon turn more into a side profession. That being said, I feel Ryzen 7 2700x would be a good way to go with the 8 core advantage on content creating. However the Ryzen 5 2600X also looks promising as my content software is nowhere near the caliber of Adobe Premier and the 2600X is very.....friendly on my wallet. I could take the money saved from buying the 2600X and put it towards the PSU I need to get, and in total, spend as much as the 2700X in total.

 

It sounds like a no brainer to me, but I thought I would share this with the community who inspired my passion for PC's in the first place and see what other enthusiasts lie on the spectrum of cost vs benefit.

 

And heres something for you to laugh at! my current specs which most things were handed down to me minus the storage and case.

 

AMD Phenom II X4 840 3.2GHz

Asus M5A97 R2.0 Motherboard

16GB (4x4GB) G.skill Ripjaws X 1600mhz

Corsair H60 120mm AiO cooler (reusing for now)

Corsair Carbide Spec 04 Case (reusing for now)

Asus ROG Strix RX570 GPU (reusing for now)

Samsung 860 Evo 500GB SSD

Seagate 1TB HDD

Evga 750B 80+ Bronze Semi modular PSU (not on QVL of new board, and I'd like a fully modular 850W and also get white braided cables)

A 2600x will do just fine. As for a PSU I recommend a quality unit, refer to this as your PSU bible:

 

Tier S, A, or B, is recommended but if you are on a budget Tier C PSU's are okay.

 

PCPartPicker is great for selecting parts and providing you with the lowest prices, it only shows compatible parts based on what you selected previously.

Thank you so much! I was thinking of going with the Corsair RM850X PSU and then ordering some white braided and combed PSU cables either from the Corsair or Cablemod lineup.

No problem! Other than going overkill on the wattage, the RMx is a high-quality unit and solid selection! Even with a serious GPU upgrade, 650W will be enough, and a white sleeved cable kit would look hella fine.

Also, the Ryzen 3000 series CPU's are likely launching in the next month or two, I would highly suggest waiting until then as you can possibly get a better CPU for the same money or get an R5 2600X for even cheaper. I just posted a thread for the R7 1700 that is now $200cad.

I have that exact combo of PSU with white braided cablemod cables, cant recommend it enough.

Haha well I did spend some money on a used GPU (the RX570) that I found in my local classifieds. I was running a GTX 760 before that. I never noticed a difference in gaming with this more up to date card, which is likely due to the fact that this phenom is running at 100% at all times when under load while my GPU is just skipping away barely doing anything

I've been hearing a lot about the new Ryzen 3000 series kits, and while I'm not completely opposed to waiting, I havent heard what its compatibility will be like on X470 chipsets, if a BIOS update would be required, which I have never done and heard it can be a nightmare.

 

I am still very new to a lot of the advanced terminology and workings of the PC, things like single and hyper threading, nm manufacturing processes, timings, all those things Linus talks about in his videos is another language to me and I am trying to figure out how to learn

 

Also wouldnt mind learning about overclocking, what it does and maybe some programming for dummies on the side

Bios updates are pretty easy and safe, you have nothing to worry about. As for continued AM4 support, AMD has promised so through to 2020 so an X470 motherboard "should" support the new CPU's, I am counting on it. 

 

Just watch some 'overclocking for beginners' videos on YouTube, there are a lot of great resources, I once was like you, didn't know much but over the years have become very familiar will all things PC.

Cool maybe I will wait, But I also don't mind going with Ryzen 2nd gen. In my area the rm650x and rm750x are currently selling for the same price so.... 750? Lol. If I can deal with a 2nd gen ryzen this build can be up and running in about 8 days. So that's exciting

Yeah if you don't really care about the new stuff then go for it! And if you buy from Memory Express they price match.

Suprisingly that's who is selling the 750 and 650 for the same price haha. Amazon has the 2700 on 10 bucks cheaper and I just ordered the white cables today the front panel of my case has yellow trim so im thinking I use my automotive skills and do a nice white platinum paint on the yellow parts

Yeah, that will do just fine for paint matching!

 

TBH you are better off just getting the white version if you are gonna spend like $80+ getting white cables anyways.

Actually that's not a bad idea. Ima cancel the order on amazon and do that. Maybe pick up a low capacity m.2 SSD to run the OS on too while I'm at it. If I have the slots I might as well use them!

Yeah like when I got custom sleeved cables for my PSU it cost $110. With the RM750x white edition, you essentially pay an $80 premium but most cable kits cost $100+ anyways so it is better value, plus you get a dope ass white PSU.

Well cablemod is selling the white cables for 75 dollars canadian which isnt bad, so if I got the black psu with the cablemods it would be roughly 10  bucks more than going with the white psu. At the end of the day, all these parts will eventually make their way into a NZXT h500i case which has the panel to hide the psu and hard drive bays, so colour of the psu isnt a huge deal

Hey so I am picking this up from memexpress on saturday, and I wanted to ask this before I build. My GPU is an 8 pin plug, and I dont know where I would be plugging in on the PSU. Is it 1 or 2?

The 8 slot connectors on your PSU are for the CPU OR the GPU, on the picture showed it would be either 1 or 2. the RMx you will get will be more clear on specifying which is which, I own the RMi and it is very clear. But in reality, they are the same so it wouldn't matter if you mixed it up!

Yeah so memexpres has an open box deal on the rm850x white, I can pick it up for less than 200. I've gone online to read the user manual and it doesnt give you any imagery on installing PCIe cables, it just says plug in the pcie cables that's all I just dont wanna fry the brand new system, which I should mention will be done this weekend

Frankly, the 2600 is a VERY marginal step down from the 2600X. Especially if you're not going to OC. ( Which is only a SLIGHT improvement there as well.)

 

In terms of gaming, I run newer games, and never see any sign of struggle on my 2600 (paired with the RX 580 8GB and 16GB DDR4 3000.) 

 

I use Autodesk Maya, Mental Ray, Blender, Photoshop, etc without any issues. (Though obviously a 2700 series would up that game, juston number of cores alone.)
