Do I blow my wad for a XE HEDT CHIP or go 9900k

Ok Ive tried to do some research on this and know a bit more then I did before.  I know that HEDT are only 8 slots.  The mainstream 9900k is not a HEDT and uses dual channel memory isntead of XE Quad Channel.  Also I know that the clock speed is 600Mhz less then a 9900k @ 4.4Ghz turbo boost.

My question is say I get 180fps at a certain point in the game.  Will the 9900k and 9980XE gives the exact same performance or will the 9900k shne since @ 5Ghz ?  I ask this because Im not spending 2000 bucks or more for something that will gives me less frame rates compared to a 540 dollar 9900k chip ?   Thanks plenty in advance.

If I can get a 18 core 36 thread I think my  DAW is set for the next 15 years easy....  So do I sacrifice and get a 9980XE or worry about single core pefrormance in games.   Mind you on a 120hz monitor.

It's basically single threaded core speed that's king for most games. But for productivity it's core count IMO that's best, so work out what's more important for you... it MIGHT be preferable to at least see what Ryzen 2 CPUs bring in 4-6 months time if you can wait? if not go with which ever you like best between productivity/multi-tasking, or gaming.

Wow same struggle here (choice between 9900K and 7980XE) tho you're mentioning 9980XE

If you'd only care about gaming performance the choice is easy made... 9900K blows everything else away on that matter

But for a good workstation... I'd say 7980XE would be best on condition that it's delidded and consequently overclocked to at least 4.6GHz... 9980XE seems to have heat issues and from what I understand is an overclocked and soldered version of 7980XE which makes it impossible to delid and reapply paste, it also can't be overclocked much because it gets too hot

This puts me off buying the 9980XE, but I'm curious if anyone has a different opinion on this... otherwise I would probably wait until both intel and AMD have stabilized a new range of HEDT platforms,, it is true that Skylake X has been out for quite a while now and I'm guessing nears its end. The 7980XE seems hard to find anywhere as it's been replaced by 9980XE so that's another problem I bumped against

I've also considered AMD Threadripper but from what I've seen single core performance is worse than that of intel..curious what others have to say

For gaming though, 9900K will be the best of the best you could get and if that was my only purpose I would've had my new PC running by now XD

Thank you for your response sir paddy-stone.  I see what you mean.  Well since my monitor is 120hz  The added few FPS that a 9900k can deliver over a 7980 or 9980XE wont be seen since I will be at vsync on.  So you answered me question good.... Im gonna go for core count I think.  I will also check out the Ryzen 2 I can wait honestly.  No rush.

Yes you my friend the ThreadRipper is not a popular card amongt gamers and high perfomrance uers.  The 18 core Intel beats the 32 core TR in most to all benchmarks except for a few.  The single cor performance gives you lower frame rates but do you care about adding 15fps or 20fps to your framerate.  If not then productivity will pown with a 9980XE.   Im still thinking if I should wait until 2020 for the 1000k Cpuers,, gosh that sound nice to say.

Yes me too!! i been thinking that exactly, to wait on 2020 new releases because these sound promising both AMD and Intel side... but for me that means settling for something less phenomenal right now as I'm currently stuck with a badass laptop, so I'm going around in circles as I need a system right now. The only thing I'd pick for workstation is 7980XE, preferably a delidded one, but that seems out of question right now :(

Ive heard geat thing aout the 7980XE with whatwever you throw it as it handles with ease and never uses all 36 threads,, maybe 8 thread and 16 core.  Honestly if your gaming is capped at 120hz or 144hz the gaming performance difference won't even be noticable.

I'm not sure what there is to think about and if you really do need to think about it, maybe you shouldn't be spending money like that on a CPU.

Either you need all those cores for whichever tasks you're doing or you don't, that simple. I would never buy that many cores just for future-proofing. That just doesn't make any sense. I rather build an entire new system every 3-6 years.

If it's literally just to blow money, go the HEDT route, I would.

the 9900k is the king of CPUs when it comes strictly to gaming performance. The 18 core HEDT chips Intel makes fall short due to lower clock speeds, though they of course are much better for multi-threaded workloads not seen in gaming currently (more like productivity tasks such as rendering 3d stills or video production).

If all you want is the most badass gaming rig you can buy right now, a 9900k is the CPU for you.

For gaming on 1440p 144Hz yea been speculating about this too, as to whether the CPU or GPU will become the bottleneck. I hear divided opinions in both user comments and reviews... If CPU won't make a diff on gaming at this level, I could just as good go for the Threadripper will it provide me more cores and not be limited to 64GB ram as with the 9900K which are both not great to look forward to. It's such a difficult choice to make right now.

Intuitively both GPU and single core CPU performance matter in games fps regardless of resolution played, so on the one hand I'm hoping for someone to confirm this to be false, while on the other hand I'm trying to decide what matters more to me.

The idea of settling with 9900K right now only to wait for a workstation in the future doesn't seem to satisfy me either, because I'll be sacrificing workstation needs in favor of gaming... for at least a whole year.

But the 9980XE from what I've heard/read... seems like a horrible choice and not worth the money >< they need to bring back 7980XE ..lol

at least until they got something better

I thought about this since some1 else asked last week. the 16 core zen 2 is very likely gonna be faster than the 7980XE, considering the price of that thing, it's probably better just waiting, if you can't wait, then the 9900k will at least give u the extra (500mhz?) single threaded over the 7980XE. Neither is a great buy right now imho.

Thanks my friend xg32 missed you lately..........

Anyhow it is not at all a rush.  My DAW, really likes the OC I did on this chip.  Because one time I had 34 tracks of VSTi and CPU usage was barely sweating at like 30 to 40 percent.  Then for kicks I went to BIOS and took my CPU clock to stock 3.4Ghz.  I launched Sonar and my project and it wouldnt even play it,, the CPU usage was at 100 percent and everything was like robotic sounding.  So see how much OCing has helped me in the studio.  Then I tried Quake Champions at 3.4Ghz and it ran exactly how it runs at my OC.  Games do not care about OC too much.  But DAW, 3D, Video Editing etc cares.  I can attest.  So right now Im cool with the DAW taking up avg 60 to 70 percent when the project is finished.  So honestly I think Im better off with aw HEDT, rather a 9900k .  Mind you Im buying the 49" Sammy 5120x1440 QLED HDR 120Hz.  So if its 120hz then why do I need high fps that a 9900k would pull off.  What matters are the minimums in games.  So long as it doesn't go below 80fps for a split second.  Once again I saw zero difference in games 3.4 to 4.6 But saw a HUUUUUGE difference in my DAW,, So I think it is better to get more threads so once its about to hit 100 percent you get saved by one core after another lol,  So in finishing I wish there was something in the middle of the 9980XE and 9900k   like a CPU right in the middle which can OC to 5Ghz but also have 12 cores instead of the 18 cores.

Im following your orders or recommendation.  Pointless to basically buy right now.  As I said I have nothing to complain about with my current setup.  So why upgrade ya know ?  Ill wait until something really cool comes out like a 10000k or 11000k or their HEDT variant 12 core @ 5Ghz.  Also quad channel memory really helps me not in game tho but in my DAW. so I cant even get a 9900k if I wanted to.  sighs...
