Need recommendations on upgrading my old rig with CPU,Motherboard and RAM upgrades

Hi everyone.

I'm quite new and inexperienced on building a PC all by myself so I need some advice.

My current system is roughly this:

- MSI Gtx 1060 6gb

- Intel Core I5 2400 3.10 GHz

- 12 GB of RAM (I don't know what my motherboard is currently)

I think my CPU is bottlenecking my GPU so I want to upgrade. I am thinking on buying a 7th Gen Intel CPU with a compatible MB but I am open to any other suggestions (AMD?)

Plus I actually don't know what would work well with the GPU at hand, so I need some guidance on what to look for on a MB and RAM and whatever I might need other than these.

Thanks in advance!

Depends on your budget but I think your GPU is fine, not high end but kinda good

I don't plan on changing the GPU and my budget is roughly around 400 usd.

Why would you buy 7th gen? If there's newer stuff out, you should be looking into that..

Ryzen is a great option. Consider getting a ryzen 5 2600, b450 motherboard, and 16gb of DDR4-3000 RAM.

@Endor21

You'd be more than happy to get a Ryzen 5 2600X + 16GB of RAM + Motherboard, which should be about 500$~, that's assuming your PSU is good enough.

7th Gen Intel is a bad buy, if you want Intel you can go with the 8th Gen i5-8400 instead if you want, but since you have a GTX 1060 they'd both perform the same in gaming, and Ryzen will edge out the 8400 significantly in productivity.

Also AMD is supposed to launch 3rd Gen Ryzen in Q2-Q3, so if you want to wait for that you can, but going to a Ryzen 2600X is already a huge upgrade, it's up to you in the end.

Why an x470 ultra? There are really great b450 boards for less.\

Also 3200 RAM is needed for Intel, since Ryzen is more speed and timing hungry.

I'm not trying to shit on your builds, I just wanted to point that out. Sorry if it comes off that way.

it's already a cheap board, and looks great, so why not?

I never recommend any motherboard under 100$ for a 2600X because of the weak VRM's, and he might upgrade later.

The ultra gaming has really shitty VRM's. A B450 tomahawk would be a better choice.

I also didn't mention it, but if there's 3000mhz ram for $10 cheaper, it's probably a better buy since the difference between 3000 and 3200 for performance is marginal.

This is my idea of a list. The 2600x comes with a good stock cooler, the ram is fast and has cl15 latency (that's good), and the board will let you do some good overclocking.

I assume you meant not needed for Intel? I know that but the 3000Mhz RAM is only 10$ less, and the 2400Mhz is 95$, I would've went with 2400Mhz, but i think it's too slow even for Intel.

don't worry i'm not offended, i'll edit the build

For normal users, 3000 or 3200 memory is almost inconsequentially different. Extensive testing has shown the difference to be normally within margin of error. As long as you get to 2800 speed, they'll be fine. For high-end setups, you want faster with tighter timings, but that costs more & you have to tune them. This is true for both AMD & Intel.

Only Z-series boards accept beyond 2666 memory on Intel platforms.

Btw, you can probably resell the CPU + Mobo + RAM for more than you expect.

Download and run CPU-Z and call it a day. :)

It should be on the Motherboard tab of CPU-Z.

I'd say if youre looking for a good upgrade go for the 2600 rather than the X variant because with good cooling and some light overclocking you can save about $30 on the CPU for a good tower cooler which should perform better than the Spire with the X SKU of the 6 core chip.

In the attached parts list youll see you can have 16 gigs at 3GHz for an XM Profile that would benefit Ryzen 5 well.

As well you'll have a solid B450 Tomahawk from MSI which should have strong enough VRMs should you choose to upgrade your you further down the line.
