MacBook Air 2018...8GB or 16GB

Hey everyone, I am looking to buy a Macbook Air 2018 for school, I want a Macbook since its harder to game on and will hopefully help remove that temptation. I do however want to be able to use it for light photo editing and 1080 short video editing. I was wondering if its a worthwhile upgrade to get 16 GB of RAM or if 8 will get the job done.

that greatly depends on what you do with it. 

 

for starters, are you someone who has 2 browsertabs open or 20?

16Gb since it's soldered and frankly 8Gbs in 2019 is dumb. Side note why the macbook air? You could get a better macbook pro for $200 more.

If you're going to go Apple, you need to plan ahead to make sure you cover any new bases that may show up on the ball field during the next few years.  I know that it will cost more but in the long run you will be glad that you did.  Go with a Macbook Pro and not the Air, and most of all, go with 16 gigs of ram and not just the 8 gigs.  I don't know how they are configured but if it doesn't have SSD, then make sure you cover that base too.  You will be SO GLAD that you did.

The ram is plenty but worst case if you need more storage you can get an external drive. That's more or less the route he would go with light video and photography editing. 

At least with the pro you will get a better processor. Honestly there is no reason to get a MacBook Air or MacBook. If you're going to get something the pro is the way to go. 

 

(I do believe all of the MacBooks come standard with 8GB of ram and the base models a 128GB drive. Any of them you would need to upgrade from there.)

IMO it's better to spend the money and go with the better version than go cheap and feel the need to upgrade in the future.

 

He did state he wanted to do light video editing which for rendering you will want the better CPU.

I don’t know about MacOS but with Windows 8gb is fine for a school type workload unless you like to have 50 tabs open.

^^^ 16GB for sure, it's impossible to upgrade and 16GB gives you a lot more freedom. And yeah, the MacBook Pro isn't much bigger/heavier and still has stellar battery life, you could go for that for just a bit more.

As an Apple fanboy, I would disagree with the other gentlemen on here. The Macbook air is about 200 cheaper. Keep it at 8 gig ram, and increase the ssd (or or work off an external drive or NAS) and use that money torwards an egpu which can then can be used for gaming. At 8gigs ram, and an SSD and EGPU (even better if you can reuse  an older graphics card you already own) you should be able to game on the new Macbook Air. Just my 2 cents.

He did state he wanted to do light video editing which for rendering you will want the better CPU. 

The new macbook pros with touch bar is a big jump in dollars. I would consider the 2017 macbook pro (without touchbar) but it comes with the Gen 2 butterfly switches and thats a dealbreaker for me

The reason I dont go for the Pro you mention is because it has the gen 2 butterfly switches and those are a dealbreaker for me as they are the ones that break easily

Well sure if you get one with the Touch Bar it will be more expensive, but I wasn't pricing a MacBook Pro with the Touch Bar, just a standard one that you can then upgrade from their with the options he may want. (Like 16gb RAM)

I get that, but the one without the touchbar uses the old butterfly switches for the keyboard, the ones that have been jamming up and that has apple facing a lawsuit. I would not want to work with those on a new machine

He wasn't wanting to use the MacBook for gaming so saving the money for an eGPU wouldn't be beneficial to him. For the light photo and video editing he wants to do he would be better off spending the extra money for the Pro and possibly expanding the RAM if the budget allows. (I would still recommend adding external storage to keep his final work on since upgrading the SSD in the laptops will get expensive fast)

 

If he wanted to game, then sure adding a eGPU would be fine, but he isn't wanting to do that, plus for the cost if he wanted to game on a laptop a gaming laptop would be a better option.

I understand where you're coming from. If you take care of your stuff it's something you shouldn't have too worry about. (I do get that it's something Apple should have rectified sooner) I still personally feel the non Touch Bar model would still be the way to go. I don't think it was as bad as it was made out to be, and last I've seen there hasn't been much of an update since May on the class action. 

 

If it were me, I'd go with the better CPU and just be extra careful with making sure nothing get's under the keys.
